Okay this is just ridiculous. I've now. Been awake for 21 hours continuously. Thankfully I've spent some of the last few hours revising when I realised I wasn't going to fall asleep.

Just what the fudge is going on?

My sleep has been stranger than usual of late TBH.

No doubt some cosmic event causing trouble. Pesky Cosmos!

IANA doctor.

However, it sounds to me like a textbook case of sleep-onset insomnia. Whether it's co-morbid and free-standing is impossible for me to say.

The things that helped (and still help) me are:

  1. Have a bedtime routine. It pretty much doesn't matter what it is as long as it's relaxing and happens every day.

I read for half an hour every night and then stop, turn out the light and wait for sleep

  2. Don't eat after about 8pm

  3. Don't ever, EVER, allow anything from work in the bedroom, especially paperwork (or revision).

  4. If sleep doesn't come after an hour, turn the light back on and read for another half an hour then try again.

  5. If sleep doesn't come, don't worry and instead just use the time as a rest

That's what worked me. YMMV

HTH ;)

I normally do have insomnia but over the past few days, I've been going to bed later than usual (3 am) and getting up around 10 am. But I've no idea why I wasn't feeling tired at 3-6 am. Normally I'm awake enough that I can't sleep but too dozy to do anything useful. Last night was different. I was *so* alert that I was able to get up and do some revision.

Even now, after four hours' sleep, I don't feel as bad as I might usually do. I've decided to sleep-deprive myself today (ie no more sleep and no naps), go to the gym this evening, and hopefully be sufficiently tired that I'll fall asleep. I do not need this kind of crap going on a few days before my exams.

Did it work?

Feck no. I had four hours' sleep last night, was up from 1030 all day, studied my brains out, went to the gym (running on treadmill), came back knackered, studied some more and I'm still wide awake.

Normally, four hours is the minimum I need to survive. I wonder how much of this is to do with the fact that I've had the last week off from work. Reckon the lack of a regular schedule has caused problems.

Sleep deprivation doesn't work to reset your body clock, your body resets itself depending on when you have breakfast. So if you don't eat anything for 24 hours and then have a good big breakfast at the time you want to wake up each morning, and then eat normally, you should want to go to sleep and get up at the right time.

You should also try to avoid bright lights late at night, for instance you may find it easier to go to sleep if you haven't been staring at a bright PC monitor for hours. And it is essential to avoid high energy food late at night, a banana is good to combat hunger pangs.

I don't follow any of this advice normally, but when I consciously want to do it, it works for me :)

Well I eventually nodded off around 3ish so I've had around six hours' sleep.

Just finished a server upgrade, which went well. This is good because it meens I don't have to drive to London at 6am :P

Unfortunately the client PC is totally fubar. We don't maintain it, which is the good news. Bad news is my MD is supposed to be demoing tomorrow, and they're probably going to expect him to fix it.

Windows Explorer keeps crashing. I can't run IE because it crashes. I downloaded Firefox via the command line, but I can't install it. In the end I just turned it off, and left instructions for it to be disconnected from the network before further investigation...

Oh dear. Rather lost track of time in Skyrim

Work in about 4 hours. At least it's Friday and thankfully it's been quiet this week :D

Lazy day. I normally get up around 0630-0700 weekdays. At the weekends, this is normally 0600 (to take advantage of the weekend).

Today, for the first time in months, I didn't get up until midday! Which unfortunately means I won't settle to sleep until around 0400. The only way to restore the balance is to spend the rest of tomorrow in a state of tiredness by getting up after four hours, so I'll be sufficiently knackered when it's bed time.

Guess I'll spend the next few hours watching Knight Rider on my piephone.

Doing a server migration tomorrow. Thought I'd get a head start by doing the backups tonight.

I should have started much earlier

OFFS - it's only taking so long because a certain person has backed up their entire fecking iTunes library onto their profile

I've backed up everything else, but I can't backup the backups until this is complete... and I'm more Federation than Klingon Empire - I wouldn't want to be me on Monday if my primary and secondary systems failed, and I didn't have a tertiary backup!

Good news is I can let the final backup run while I sleep.

Sleep T - 38 minutes ...
