Mine are thirteen years old now. Stearling service, but I will be replacing them soon..... with another pair.

You simply can't recommend a good boot, what is perfect for one person can be potentially injurious to another. As for materials however, i recommend leather, non-waterproof boots, as these tend to be more breathable. In a hot humid climate especially waterproof fabric boots would be terrible, though they would be good for a walk in the lake district or the dales, as you can pretty much walk in streams and still have dry socks.

You must go to a shop that has a good measuring system, one that analyses your gait and pronation of your feet. http://walking.about.com/od/shoechoice/a/wayyouwalk.htm

Also don't be scared of trying the womens boots, as these can be good for a thinner footed male.

I prefer boots over shoes because the thicker soles make walking on pebbles much more comfortable, you can also jam a walking boot in between crevices to get a foothold when scrambling. IF you're just walking a nice country trail, check out some approach shoes (trainers) or even walking sandals, as you don't need mountain boots for non-mountain walking.

If you plan on walking on ice, make sure you get a boot that is compatible with crampons.

get these socks http://www.smartwool.com/

and try on your new boots with the socks you'll be wearing.

I haven't tried them, but I'd also recommend http://www.thorlo.com/ as worth their weight.
