I voted this afternoon. I think I did it right anyway. I ticked the Conservatives because I want them to win, and put a big fat cross next to the BNP for obvious reasons Peter.

Not literally? That would count as a spoiled paper as you'd market two boxes.

I think Peter is joking... I didn't vote I went to the poll place and got turned away because I hadn't registered...I didn't know I had to...I wasn't told where I could register...

And as to the OP, we got a leaflet through for the conservatives, nobody else though...Saw a sign for the BNP on a lamp post outside work...

I was yes. I seriously didn't realise how many choices there were to vote from though. It took me forever to find the right one! One thing I found strange was that we were forced to vote in pencil. What's stopping them rubbing them all out and changing them? I didn't vote I went to the poll place and got turned away because I hadn't registered...I didn't know I had to...I wasn't told where I could register... [/quote] You have to be on the Electoral Register in order to vote, plus you can only vote at your "Home" polling station, unless you've informed them in advance. I think that's how it works anyway. Peter.

It's nice of the many official people to tell me that! Why do you have to be on a register? Surely if you could produce some form of ID with an NI card then that should be enough, they then add you to a database when you pop your ballot in the box and you can't vote again that day...

This is a good point, actually. However, I think the answer is a little more pragmatic in that pencils are cheap and less likely to leave a permanent mark on the booth if someone decided to tag it.

Isn't it about time that it was all done electronically? I mean - how many man hours does it take to count all the votes? We should be able to do it online by logging in with our Government Gateway account.

:O Are you suggesting that we should all get stored in a government database? With some way to identify us!? People won't like that! I agree with you as it happens, but I guess someone could find out who you voted for, imagine if someone released all the names of people who voted for the BNP...Poor people would get torn apart.

No, as it happens I'm not suggesting that a database be stored of who has voted for what, as it happens. Of course, people would have to log-in to vote, and it would have to be recorded that a vote has been made from that account, but who has voted for which candidate wouldn't need to be stored, only a total number of votes for each candidate.

But how do you identify who's on the electoral roll and eligible to vote? And who's already voted and thus can't anymore? Edd
