So my two year old speakers broke down yesterday... well to be more precise, the speakers themselves function perfectly but whenever i plug and unplug headphones to the remote control dock they don't switch back over. With a bit of coaxing (replugging and unplugging headphones and wiggling it around) they can sometimes revert back to normal but even that's temperamental and not a proper solution since i can't do it on demand and i regularly flick between headphones and speakers depending on whether i'm on voice comms, the time of the day (or night) etc.
So i email Altec Lansing and tell them of my problem and whilst i do get a very quick reply (this morning in fact) they tell me that the set has been discontinued for 3 years (despite me having bought them only 2 years ago) and there's nothing they can do.
To be honest i'm rather annoyed since they've been known for their quality and reliability (i have another set of speakers from them which have lasted over ten years and a move to and from Hong Kong). Not really sure exactly what i can do here since the warranty apparently only lasts for a single year as well.
For now i've asked to see if they have any spare Control Docks they can send me but other than that feeling kind of lost with regards to the issue.

Sale of Goods Act Warranty is a waste of time. Go back to the place you bought them from. Call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06

2 Year old speakers, I don't think Altec Lansing are that premium a brand so probably doesn't cost too much, length of time is probably reasonable Is it really worth the hassle and time of fighting?

Bl**dy thing! The seat height adjustment lever on my mum's Yaris has bust. Instead of using a shaft that is then bent to form a lever (i.e. the way that works), someone at Toyota decided to end the shaft with a 10mm square stud and operate it with a sh*tty polyprop diecast handle. Classic case of over-designed and under-engineered.

Classic case of engineering by accountancy, I'm afraid. Your mum's Yaris was built to a price, and to that, corners were necessarily cut. And that's as true of Toyota as it of Jaguar as it is of BMW.

For a currently unemployed graduate £90 is a relatively costly amount to me, especially for pc speakers... at the very least i think it means i should get more than 2 years out of my speakers. And whilst they aren't a high end audiophile brand, they're still a rather well regarded make in terms of audio products. In an update, they replied to my email where i stated my displeasure at their response. They said that whilst they weren't able to send me any replacement parts they offered me a replacement to their MX6021 speakers if they were within a 2 year period. Whilst mine are slightly older (by 13 days) i'm hoping they'll still accept this offer. Apparently the M6021s cost more, but the reviews of them weren't exceptional... in the long run i think they'll suffice as an adequate replacement though.

I don't disagree that, but proving reasonable length is a whole other matter. If they offer a usage based refund you could get practically nothing Glad you possibly have a result though

I spent an hour and a half trying to diagnose and fix an intermittent sound problem on my PC. Pulled the card, tried the onboard, cleaned the drivers, reinstalled drivers, reinstalled the x-fi and tried new drivers. Then, after all that, I noticed the damage to the line volume controller on my headphone wire. I can be especially dense, sometimes.

You really are trying to give yourself reason to buy new kit. Was it all ok after your slight fluid mishap, so to speak?

Yeah, and I've just bought that Lian Li V1200+ from Cookie. It was purely out of my paypal balance, from the kit I've sold recently, but that won't matter for the first half hour when it arrives - she'll be on full steam, and she won't hear a word I say until she's had a good old rant at me. Ooer, missus. It was just a split in the seal on the GPU block, so it was a very slow leak and I had a replacement seal on hand. It didn't go near any circuitry and Feser One claims to be non-conductive, although I wouldn't want to test the theory. I'll be rebuilding it all again when the Lian Li arrives - putting in separate loops for the CPU and GPU.

Some Facebook status messages are driving me mad. One did the rounds recently about Yorkshire women and how they are proud yet the content just made me feel sad (I'll post it if I can find it). Take this latest one for example. It suggests mums have it hard, etc yet seems to be posted my those who live off the social and breed ever bigger families while we all pick up the tab (dont ask why I'm 'friends' on FB with these people!). Like this....
So you ask...Do I work? Uh yes, I work 24 hours a day. Why?Because I am a Mum. I am an alarm clock, a cook, a maid, a teacher, a nanny, a nurse, a handyman, a security officer, a judge/jury, a photographer, a counselor, a chauffeur, an ATM, a jungle gym & a comforter. I don't get holidays, sick pay or days off. I work through the DAY & NIGHT. I am on call at ALL hours. Re-Post if you are a proud Mum & love it
So I posted this.....
So you ask… do I work? No, because the social pay for me to stay at home and watch Jeremy Kyle repeats on ITV2. They take care of Council Tax and rent too so I can spend what little money I do have on fags, booze and Farmville [LIFTED]. With the kids at school all day it can get boring but I can post status messages on Facebook to justify being a lazy sod that can’t be arsed to get a job.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.
