This appears to be Bratty's own attempt at playing QI on the forum. That suggests to me that he's a slightly overweight homosexual.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

It's probably Impossible to say if any given person at this point dies of aftereffects but it's possible to compare death rates compared to the norm. Then you can look at the difference compared to sample size and there are calculations that will tell you how likely it is that the difference is due to random chance. Generally speaking scientists say if it's less than 5% likely that it is by chance then that's considered causal. So you can't say if this bloke was killed by Chernobyl, but you probably can say that x extra people died and it's very unlikely it was not caused by Cherynobyl.

LOL thanks for explaining - I was talking to KW earlier about this thread, and we were debating why you asked. Figured it was the sort of thing you'd know about, so it must be a social experiment of some kind that you like doing. He said he didn't think Chernobyl was a town, I said it must be because I saw the abandoned houses on a video. I guess I was wrong So what does Chernobyl really stand for?

*sigh* Black grass or something or other. It was named after wormwood and some mentalists have therefore linked it to the New Testament

I don't think he was being entirely serious . I'm a firm fan of Hanlon's razor - "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

Some corrections: - It's in Ukraine, not Russia
- It's spelled Chornobyl
- Chornobyl is a city
- Chornobyl is also the name of a district
- The name of the reactor was actually the V.I. Lenin Nuclear Power Station. The name "Chornobyl" was applied after the disaster
- It was constructed to serve the city of Chornobyl and the surrounding area
- Prip'yat is the name of the nearest city which was constructed to house the power station workers and their families
- Chornobyl is also the name of the massive military radar station a few miles away...
- so Chornobyl is not only the name of the power station but several other places besides
If you're going to try being a clever dick, you also need to be correct
