I think one of the main problems now is that audiences haven't got the stamina for a film that revolves around a plot, has good acting and a dialogue that actually adds something. Nowadays, unless it has an explosion every 30 seconds, sentences of less than six words, each containing words of less than three syllables, they don't get it. I'm surprised there haven't been movies of Eastenders, Corrie or even X-Factor - The Movie (perhaps that's a bad idea.....). Avatar only succeeded because of the novelty of 3D - the film itself was pretty mediocre, the last three Star Wars films were poor and I've yet to see any remake that's better than the original. Maybe I should have half my brain removed - then I might enjoy them more

That's not fair. You can still derive a lot of enjoyment from a not great film if it has elements you like. If everybody's gonna be a snob and say they'll only watch things with a plot, Hollywood would die. The studio pictures allow the independents, indies and well written stuff to continue to exist.
I'm an intelligent guy, but I still enjoy explosions. It's not all I enjoy, but it's still there. Avatar was a great cinematic experience, but we've done that dance a thousand times. Having just watched it in 2D BD it lost some of it's edge, but still looked gorgeous and I still love the story, but that's just me, obviously.
The other thing to remember about remakes, is that a lot of movie-goers are now too young to remember the originals. They're only really a remake if you're aware of the original. Just like music is recycled from the 70s, 80s and even the 90s now. The majority of the music buying public don't notice.
It might be a little sad, but it's easy to understand.

It's true that many a film can get by without much of a plot... actually, they could in the 80s/90s, that combined with pathetic scripts makes for 'average at best' films these days Explosions kinda bore me these days unless it's done to be shocking or if it's actually used to propel the story. It's partly the fault of directors going down the 'Michael Bay explosion' route for me I'd certainly agree that a lot is recycled these days in the entertainment industries.

I'm not - we don't make films in this country any more, unless it's for other people. Where's the next Kevin Smith coming from? The next Wes Anderson? They're surely out there somewhere, and despite being told that "thanks to digital everything, you can make a movie at home" that's only a small part of the story. I can understand why Hollywood treads predictable paths with their IPs. It's not as if the economy is terribly healthy, and if you're ploughing $10million+ (more than likely much more) into a movie, you want to play it as safely as possible to ensure you're not going to lose your shirt on it. So do you go with the property that you cynically know the audiences will whoop for with the names and familiar story, or the unknown story from a director who's never made a film before and some actors off the TV? Or, if you are that latest rising star, with a red hot script, great performances and a low, low budget - congratulations. You've got your movie made. But you're an independent, so try getting distribution. You could have the greatest film in the world, but that means nothing if people don't see it. So what do you do? You're in a market where some studios own the system top to bottom - literally from sound stages to the hot dogs you buy at the cinema. You're stuck, probably owing lots of cash to numerous people, with a film nobody's going to see. It's like running a cafe - if you know that your £5 all day breakfast is the big attraction to the bus depot workers next door, and that they prop you up through the quiet months, do you cancel it and start putting boeuf bourguignon at £7.50 a plate on instead?

Exactement. In other words - economics 101. But my point was how many of us only see stuff with an amazing plot? You're not telling me that people here won't cue up for Batman 3 without knowing a THING about it, are you?? Coz that's bollocks. Everybody likes a good bit of IP up to a point.

The big studios need to make money and so do play safe. Movie franchises are the biggest success story with guaranteed ticket and DVD sales. That is why so many Marvel films will be made, and why the Spiderman films will be remade. The independents need to make profits as well, but tale a different route of doing it, by making it on a tight budget. They get new stars and a decent script that does not rely on effects to create a great movie.

Yes but if Len Wiseman is directing then maybe we get his wife Kate Beckinsale as Melina?

I do think that most of these remakes are a waste of time and effort.

Mixed feelings about this. The first one is genuinely a good film, mainly because of Riggs' emotional state, which is something that was sorely missing from all it's sequels, so if they do it without that then this is going to be just another buddy-cop film, which I don't think we need. Mark

All of the Lethal Weapon films without Joe Pesci/Leo Getz are good.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Loved the first couple, the third was tolerable, the fourth was something your mum would really enjoy
