What does a missing cat have to do with a double murder? Ask Dirk Gently, the star and title character of the upcoming BBC Four drama. You won't get any answers in this trailer, but you'll get a first look at the random, chaotic detective and his mad methods.

As we told you back in August, Dirk Gently is a one-hour detective show based on two novels by the late Douglas Adams, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul, themselves based in part on a famed unaired Doctor Who episode.

BBC Four says:

Anti-hero Dirk Gently operates his eponymous detective agency based on the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. Perpetually broke, hopelessly chaotic and utterly infuriating, most people suspect Dirk is nothing more than a cheap conman. And they might be right—but nevertheless his methods, though unusual, do often produce surprising results.
BBC Four bills the show as a "drama," but if it uses any of its source material, it should contain plenty of light British wit, ghosts and the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It may even involve the creation of all life on Earth.

It brings to mind a cross between Doctor Who and Sherlock. We're calling it a "must-watch."
