Not incest in the true sense, but enough for a psychologist to write a theory on.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I learned lots from the Sixty Symbols YouTube channel.

Did you know that there is a calculated minimum distance. As in, nothing can happen that involves an action with a distance smaller than it. It is 1.6 * 10^-35 m. There is a calculation for gravity that uses this length. So, in the first few billionths of a second, when the universe was smaller than this distance what did gravity do?!

Protons are 10^ -15 m in diameter... (roughly).

Red shift is caused not by the stretching of the radio waves but by the stretching of space time caused by the expansion of the universe!

If you were to fill a cup with the material from a white dwarf it would have the same mass as an elephant.

If you were fill a teaspoon with the material from a neutron star it would have the same mass as Mount Everest!!!

I thought this was down to a very basic Doppler effect as a result of movement. Can you elaborate on the stretching part with regards to space time?

I also thought it was similar to the Doppler effect. The only similarity is the resultant interpretation of the wave. i.e. with the Doppler effect the sound "appears" to be a higher/lower frequency than it is at its source.

The Doppler effect is easy to understand as the source is a vibration and as each vibration (and its compression wave) is produced the source is moving relative to you and so the compression waves are either closer together or further apart.

Light doesn't work that way. Light isn't produced over time. The colour (frequency) of a light source is instantaeneous. It is held within each photon particle/wave. The photon is only altered AFTER it leaves its source and is altered by the small changes in space/time which can make it appear to be a different frequency even though it hasn't changed (from its own POV).

If that makes sense.

Ah! Readin the wiki it appears both are correct... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redshift#E ... n_of_space

I would have thought that both light (EM) and sound were both produced in an instant. I understand that light can be altered when it passes through a medium such as glass, water or air, but so can sound.

I'll sleep on it. :D

Sound can be produced in an instant but it is not produced instantaeneously. i.e. no matter how short the sound is it is produced by movements of air molecules by the vibration of some source. That vibration has a certain frequency with which it moves back and forth. This allows for the Doppler effect. (It turns out light is also afefcted this way but I can't see how as a photon particle is emitted not produced).

i.e. I thought the wave was all bundled up into each particle not spread out over all particles. It is the energy of each photon hitting our retina that gives light its colour.

It might be down to photons having properties of waves and particles.

There is no real distinction at the quantum level, it's down to how you observe it. If you want it to be a wave it's a wave. If you want it to be a particle, it's a particle.

There are very few (if any) gentlemen left.

Picture this: me and a guy heading for same seat on train and instead of being a gent he pushed in front of me and sat down. Now I don't mind standing but I have to get 3 different trains to work so by the time I'm on the 3rd one I'd like a seat if I get the opportunity.

Not only that but I was walking to the escalator in line for walking up the left hand side and another guy just pushed in front of me! Maybe I'm invisible....

I try to be as chivalrous as possible.

I definitely wouldn't have pushed past you and you'd have been allowed to take that chair.

I still hold doors and all the rest...

LOL!

Aww fanx but you wouldn't last 2 minutes on the London Underground system. I'm quite lucky I go against the grain so to speak as I'm heading to the outskirts of London and everyone else heading in to London. I miss a lot of the rush. They were 6 deep at the platform going north bound at Victoria this morning so elbows required to get on a train!

I think I'd have landed heavily - and I can be heavy when required - on his lap, then apologised profusely for assuming the seat was still vacant.
