so can some one give me a very simple reason why not .
as you all know or should, I have one here ,its useful ,it helps day to day and if i remeber right it cost 40€.

Why do we need them? It's just another thing that's going to get lost/damaged/forgotten.

We have passports, drivers licenses, those Pass card things, do we really need anything else? And what are they for?

I'm on the fence...

On the one hand I've nothing to hide so bring 'em on.
On the other hand, I've already shelled out for a driving licence, I've just shelled out close to £100 for my first passport (passport + train fairs to and from my nearest office to be interviewed) plus had all the faff that is the passport application process...Do I really want to spend more time and money filling in forms, potentially going for an interview, possibly being told I'm not me because I forgot my parents anniversary?

If I can tick a box, photocopy my passport and/or driver licence and whack it in a provided envelope with a £10 cheque, then yes, I'd have one.

If they took over from being a passport and driver licence, then I guess I'd have to get one...And if it did it wouldn't worry me, my drivers licence would get taken out of my wallet and I'd carry my ID card instead. To me, as long as they serve as a valid claim to my age when I want to buy alcohol, validate my claim of nationality to let me in and out of this and other countries, then I'm happy.

Agreed. "Papiren" (sp?) one of the very few German words I know, for exactly this reason.

The cards themselves are the major problem I have. It's the database behind them I don't like and the future RFID possibilities, but then maybe I'm the paranoid, anti-govt. exception?

Dead against them, I'm not accountable to HMG and I fail to see why the govt. is entitled to my DNA, fingerprints and/or Iris scan and all the other information they want me to give them. Additionally, they expect ME to keep these details up-to-date, with tough penalties on ME if any of information held on the database about me is incorrect.

ID cards won't stop crime, they won't stop terrorism, they won't stop fraud and it's going to cause an "us and them" scenario with the Police (ie. Stop you just to see your "papers").

I rather think it's up to them to provide a solid argument to introduce them.

I can't see too many pros in the situation, but plenty of cons, including the fact I wouldn't willingly give this current government the smell of yesterday's sh1te

First of all, the whole thing will be rendered pretty much pointless as soon as somebody with evil intent uses a fake one (and it will happen). Also, are we really talking about going back to the days of stopping ordinary people in the street (think the IRA campaigns)? That never did much before, and it sure as f*ck won't make any difference to a suicide bomber

Then there's the small matter of every (other) government IT scheme being a massive f**k-up

What do they DO?

What if someone steals mine and I don't notice for weeks?

What benefit will I get?

How does it help day to day?
Do you have to carry it by law? If you're stopped and can't produce it, what happens?



Everything what?!?! Is it a credit card too? Can it make beer? Does it get me on the train?

I'd be all for a universal ID that was valid the world over. You could use it as a kind of "passport". Oh wait, I have one of those...

The primary problems with the proposed UK scheme as I remember it:

1. If it is not compulsory to carry it, it won't stop crime in any way and is completely pointless in that regard.
2. If it is compulsory, then you'd be a criminal every time you went to the beach or swimming pool. Or do you stick yours somewhere private? What happens if someone steals it from you?
3. It's attached to a huge database, which will be broken into and all our identities cloned or altered.
4. It's going to cost billions.
5. I already have a passport. It's a voluntary form of ID far more useful to me than what's been proposed.

To summarise; it's expensive and serves no useful purpose unless you're in the ID theft industry in which case it'll be a great boon to your criminal empire.

I'd much prefer a simple bar-code or chip on the back of the neck or wrist. For one thing, it's harder to lose.

Could we sue it to replace all the work ID badges as well ? They are a nightmare. But it was fun using my BBC staff ID to get my day pass to get into a secure government establishment for a few months.
