Exactly. Quite a lot of raw materials now work this way when you're talking about buying huge amounts.

So everybody normal knows exactly what everything they buy costs down to the penny? Total crap. It's less than a pound, I have a pound, I buy bread, I get change, I put change in pocket, I don't look at change until I need it for random car park.

£1.00 to £1.30 normally.
It costs me about £1.30 for a loaf, but they tend to do three for £3.
You can buy it for less than a pound per loaf, but it is usually sh!te, and the kids won't eat it.

I was joking. Bread prices at the supermarket change regularly. As you say there is a range where you do not worry, unless you notice that the loaves are getting smaller for the same price. Also with the current speculation of wheat prices the price could change soon enough.

I usually buy Sainsbury's thick sliced white at 47p and Asda's medium sliced brown at the same price. They're not bad; actually better than many of the much more expensive brands. However, Sainsbury's and Tesco's cheap brown is 50p and tastes like cardboard. The only bread worse is the split tin wholemeal for between 90p and £1.30 from a couple of local bakers; that's expensive cardboard...

A lot of places have been producing artisan bread recently. Enough with the fancy names and call it what it really is, real or quick and dirty.

Yes my local village baker has just that sort of bread. It probably has higher profit margins that help maintain the business.
