If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Sherlock
Sunday 25th July, 9pm, BBC 1. A three part update of Sherlock Holmes starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the new Holmes and Martin Freeman as his loyal friend, Doctor John Watson. Rupert Graves plays Inspector Lestrade.
Preview looks interesting but a bit reminiscent of the Guy Ritchie film in some respects. Co-created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss of Doctor Who fame. Perhaps this is what they were writing instead of making the Doctor Who scripts better.

I'm actually watching one of the guys on Something for the weekend at the moment, and popped in to remind everyone about this very programme. It looks good. Watch it!

I saw the opening few minutes as a clip and it's refreshingly similar to the first chapter of A Study In Scarlet, given the change in period. However I do slightly worry that whatsisface Who bloke will want to concentrate on the characters rather than the mystery, which at the end of the day isn't what Holmes stories are supposed to be. Yes, it did concentrate on the characters, but that doesn't mean it wasn't first rate television. I can't wait for the next episode, and it's not often I say that... in fact, I don't think I've liked a first episode this much since I watched Sharpe, about a million years ago. Brilliant! h

Although you're right that the interpretation was different it somehow did manage to still be true to the books - and actually the books, not the previous TV adaptions. Watson isn't a bumbling fool as often shown and Holmes is not in an any sense a 'likeable' person - in fact he's an incredible ass. Also the case didn't rely on a 'Murder she wrote' style macguffin in the main, although it wasn't as clever as the resolution of the actual Study in Scarlet. I particularly liked the quick shot sequence as he tracked the cab's path through London attempting to head it off. It would also be fair to consider that you have to do some character set up in the first episode, you can't just assume everybody will understand the full nature of Holmes, Watson and how they interact. And I see Gatiss actually nicked the best role for himself.... An admirable start, no doubt about that. Sadly, I shall be nowhere near a television next Sunday night. Thank god for modern recording technology! Jon

Yes, the first episode of Sherlock was very good even though I felt the ending was a bit flat compared to the previous 80 mins. Interesting to see similarities and variations from A Study In Scarlet. I'll definitely watch next week even though I'm unsettled by Benedict Cumberpatch's resemblance to Gary McKinnon.
