Don't just say to yourself "Plan was to get a zoom lens first and possibly a macro lens later to have a reasonable set of covering most bases", work out what you think you need them for first.

And once you've got one lens, use it for a bit. Work out what it's good at, and work out what it can't do. If it can't do something you want to do, add that requirement to your list of future lens requirements. Then when you've got the money for another lens, see which requirements you could fulfill, and buy a lens to do that (or more likely, wait and save up more!). Don't plan a list of things to buy before you've got used to your current stuff.

Having said that, I would rate a fast-fifty as a very good lens to learn with, once you've worked out where all the controls are on the camera.

A low f value means the lens is faster so instead of having to select a high ISO like 800 on a lens with an f/4, with that 50mm f/1.7, you could get away with maybe an ISO of 200, which generally means a less noisy picture.

You'd be able to shoot at just a smidgen less than ISO 100 in that case, as f/2 is two stops wider than f/4.

Well currently bidding on 3 lenses as part of a kit with a film slr, case, lenses etc

Minolta AF 28 F2.8
Minolta AF 70-210 F3.5-4.5
Minolta AF 35-80 F4-5.6

Looking at about £50-60 for the lot which given the condition and amount of use (very little) seems very reasonable :)

Didn't win that auction but won one for a 75-300mm lens

£53 in total, then say another lens, same spec and model.... go for nearly £100!

If you have £20 to spare then now is a good time to get a spare battery for your A450.
You can save an extra £1 if you order online using the JESSOPS5 discount code.
