You see, I think the exact opposite. I always think the "special relationship' is doomed to failure because we're far more European than we realise. I certainly feel more at home in France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Holland or Greece than I do in Australia or I would in the US, despite the language issues.

Then add in American attitudes to gays marriage abortion and so many other things and we are far more European.

There's some things I admire the US for - they know that really, you need at least 5 litres under the bonnet of your car for starters, and price petrol sensibly.
On the other hand, they're bat [LIFTED] insane in all sorts of little ways that we aren't. Like gun laws, for a start.
Or being able to vote before you can buy a beer. Or wait longer to join a library than you do to buy a gun.
I do think the US represents a lot of good - personal liberty for instance - it's just been badly managed over too many years.
They even abolished slavery way before we did (we finally outlawed slavery less than ten years ago).

The EU on the other hand has a shared history with us (even bits when we weren't all at war with each other) that goes back hundreds of years before the US of A was even invented.
I'd have to agree with Tom, we're more European than we care to admit.

The peoples of the EU largely share our moral and social values, while America is a cesspit of selfish hypocritical greedy narcissistic ignorant capitalist pigs.

Everything that is wrong with Europe is the disease that began in America and spread via Britain. The sooner we realise they are the plague that is destroying the world, the sooner we can put them in isolation and cleanse ourself of their Aids.

I voted EU.

Given the options presented, it would be an absolute no brainer for me. EU all the way.

But if we're speculating here, what's to say that come the time the UK feels it's "done for" that any of these bodies of power will be as they are today? What's not to stop us picturing the US fracturing north/south, east/west, republican/demorcratic? What's not to stop present EU members opting out or Russia splitting even further? Then there's the question of what the African nations will be doing round about that time, how the Middle East is faring, and what China's plans are. All this and we've still not considered some big players - Brazil, India, Australia... etc

Not wishing to rubbish the thread, but imagine for a second we all stopped supposing "what if" and got on with what's important, growing up and living together? Then we could hypothesize on single state systems, universal education and healthcare... Hmm? ;)

In the meantime, I could explain it all. But frankly, why talk about that when you've made a classic Snowy post of a thought out and genuine nature. Reminds me of the old days of drug and religion debates at the old place :)

BRICs and the next 11 are far more important for the future. I think there's a lot of hate for the US here and virtually none for the EU. Whilst I don't advocate hate in and of itself, in this context to blame the US for EVERYTHING and not even consider the EU is a tad myopic IMHO.

Our position as a single state would only become untenable if we continued our reliance on other countries for lots of things like energy, oil, food, etc. etc. As a country, a little more independence might be an interesting consideration.

But when most people are happy to let a webpage/truck combo do their shopping for them - what hope do we have?

Why do we need to "ally" ourselves with anyone? Recently, whenever we've allied ourselves with another country, we've ended up doing something that most of us didn't like very much (invading Iraq, trying to sort out Afghanistan - something everyone else who's tried has singularly failed to do). I was quite happy (well, to be honest, I wasn't, because I wasn't really paying attention at the tiem, but if I had been I probably would have been, if you see what I mean...) when we were part of the Common Market. That was enough - we don't need all the s*** that the EU has happily dumped on us, and we don't nee the Ameicans telling us to bend over every time they want to invade somewhere.

We should be like New Zealand, or Sweden, or Iceland - just keep ourselves to ourselves and let the rest of the world did itself a mighty big hole (preferably one into which we can push the lot of them, then fill it in again and plant parsley on it).

The EU have no true moral values either, and they are at least as corrupt as the US, if not far more. The complex multi-lingual/multi-cultural setting merely makes it easier to hide things.

We fund a disproportionately large armed force, mainly for historical reasons. This is what sets us apart from the EU and puts us more in line with the US.

However, we have yet to become as truly [LIFTED] crazy as the Americans, so perhaps we are better off becoming more of a background noise on the world stage and funding pies for everyone 8-)

We hold many, many socialist ideals in line with our European neighbours - such as welfare and universal healthcare, which would never see the light of day in the US.
