Ouch. That's a hell of a price to pay for the phone when you're paying £30 a month too.

Yup, it's standard across all networks :( unfortunately.

I may go for the £35 a month contract to get a slightly cheaper phone.

Work out if you need those extra minutes. Though you could make savings elsewhere like use it for all your calls and save on the landline calls, that could help provide some extra savings.

I don't understand why people bother with landlines, unless they need ADSL of course.

Mobile contracts are so cheap now, and a mobile phone is more convenient.

Our landline currently costs us around a fiver a month, with free UK calls.

Can you match that with a mobile contract, because I'd like to know if there is one out there.

We live on a farm in the back-end of nowhere and rarely have decent mobile signal.

A quick look on the o2 website shows a £10 monthly contract which gives a choice between unlimited o2 to o2 or unlimited landline, plus 300 included minutes for other networks and unlimited text messages.

I don't know the specifics of your free UK calls, but if it's landline only then the £10 contract may work out cheaper. It's certainly more convenient - one phone number and you are contactable just about anywhere.

Whilst being a student this is the route I've taken, just for continuity as much as anything.

I'm not sure this is a good thing, though. People managed for years without always-on comms. One of the things I love about the very-North is that I get very patchy phone signal for a week or two.

I don't have a land line.

In the past year I've only once gone over 150 mins in a month. Although I may use it more for texting?

I think for the smaller initial payment I'll go for the bigger contract.

The free calls are to UK landlines, so I give you that one.

But then, I'm always here (at the moment). We hardly ever call mobile numbers.

My mobile is turned off. I have it with me when out, but even out yesterday it was turned off for the duration. I'm on PAYG and pay about £50 a year to top it up, I use it so little.

Yes but you need a landline even for cable. I have freeview TV which is free but only with a landline and if I want broadband only they add another £11 to the broadband cost. So whatever they get you. Also remember it is free to call landlines not mobiles.

Yes but if I do not have the phone they add the cost of the phone to the broadband or TV. So my freeview TV will cost me £16

I have Virgin 10Meg broadband for £19 a month.

I don't have a phone or the TV and if I add either of them it will make the total bill a lot more expensive.

Well, you're getting mugged then aren't you Amnesia.

I get 100 TV channels on Virgin HD, and 10mbps internet for £30 per month.

Get to Tesco and buy a cheap freeview box and have freeview for free.

*Shrug*
