The NYT app has been panned in every review I've heard so far. Basically it wraps up the web page, but doesn't allow you to jump to an article, you have to read it one page at a time. The reviewers have called it trying to hold onto the past and force the users to read the paper from cover to cover, instead of letting them dip into the articles that interest them, or search for an article or term. Popular Science is supposed to be fantastic, in its use of the technology, but absolutely unreadable! There is also a Periodic Table app, which is absolutely fantastic, but also very expensive (I think it cost $15?). Edit: The Elements: A Visual Exploration, costs 10,99€ here in Germany. Even the couple of sample pictures look fantastic and there is a lot of information and high quality photos in there.

It's actually the interactive version of a 'coffee table' book that predates the iPad. It's listed as £7.99 on the UK app store. Apple have a quick movie of it in action on their iPad apps section here. Well worth that much IMO, especially if you have school age children. Just done a quick 'wish list' of the ipad specific apps I'd buy if I got one (who am I kidding ). It comes to a scary amount of money. Don McAllister (Mac podcasting bloke) said that if you decide to get an iPad, make sure to budget for all the new apps you'll buy to show it off. He wasn't wrong...

Leo Laporte reckons he bought enough apps, books and films for his iPad on the opening weekend, that it easily matched the purchase price of the iPad (he bought the 16GB version)!

All I need to know is that I want one. How I am going to fund it is another matter.

Actually funding is not the problem just the timing because of cash flow. Though selling kidneys are out.

Quite right, though I was not so much thinking about selling bits of your body off, just sort of renting it out for while…

I do not fancy the idea of being a rent boy.

It seems there are printing utilities out there for the iPad http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/a ... dling.htmlIt would be nice to have it integrated into the OS though. Maybe that will come soon.

I'd be surprised if Apple did printing as part of the iPhone OS - the bundle of drivers for all the gazillion printers out there would be huge, not to mention the task of getting the printer manufacturers to provide just a driver, and not the whole bunch of other crap that comes with most drivers e.g. photo-scan-view-edit-share-stitch-fax'n'copy-deluxe Pro2... That said, there must be a simpler way of doing it with generic drivers - print to pdf, then pdf to whatever Bonjour printer iPad finds on the network, maybe?? Or print drivers as Apps supplied by manufacturers? Cheers, Pete.

I have my printers on Airport expresses so could print directly via wifi but I would have the same problem of printer drivers unless it used the mac as a bridge and used its device drivers.

Hmm, there must be some solution. I wonder how Apple will solve this one.

I always thought that all printers could print PS files? At least I recall sending PS files? If so, just find a printer on the network, print to PS and then fire it off to the printer.

Not all printers can print PS files. I'd say very few 'consumer' inkjet printers can for example. What they would do is use the inbuilt Apple OS PDF support to 'print' to transitory PDF files which could be transmitted wirelessly to a proxy application on a Mac or PC which could then print out the PDF using it's printer drivers. That's about the best you're going to be able to do without having to actually install drivers on the iPhone/iPad itself.
