£66 for a new machine? It seems fair enough. I presume Apple would either refurb or recycle the old one which makes it a green solution.

The devil will be in the detail. How failed does a battery have to be before it qualifies? What time period will it extend to?

That said, I have never had to replace a battery in an Apple product.

I have to use my MacBook Pro on the charger now. If I unplug it it lasts around 20 minutes before just turning off with no warning.

The MBP is 2.5 years old. This first started 1 year after I bought it and Apple replaced the battery. Then another year later it is now happening again.

I'm not impressed.

I even made sure I followed the recharge calendar reminder to the day to keep the life going in it. It was fine until one day I was using it and had to plug it in for some reason. From that point on it started turning off with no warning when the battery was low and gradually the battery life dropped and dropped.

The annoying thing is that when I unplug it it tells me there is 4.5 hours of life left then after 20 mins it just turns off.

Did you calibrate the battery when you first got it?

Not with the first one as I didn't know I had to.

With the second one I did all that stuff. Updated the battery firmware (or whatever) calibrated it by running it down etc...

I can't remember exactly what I did but I was on the Apple site following the instructions of what to do with a new battery. I also downloaded the battery charging schedule for iCal.

I guess I should have added YMMV

Was the MBP one with a sealed battery?

No, I think it was the last (or second last) before the unibody model. September 2007.

My friend Jen's just done a review of a Comic app for the iPad - if you're into that sort of thing. ;)

I heard on a podcast recently a comment that I agreed with. Comic apps will not be a massive for comic "nerds". They will however be great for people who like to read comics. That is just read, not store, not collect, not swap, not hunt down at autions, not go to comic-book fairs.

If you want to read a series from issue one of a set of books that started last year the comic app. will be just the ticket. No hassle getting all the issues, no hassle storing the books, just the fun of reading the content.

8-)

It seems the iPad is a hit with blind people.

It shows that the iPad has more user features than has been mentioned at the keynotes. I can see it being good for kids as well, reading the stories for them.

I can foresee a time when a child might find a dusty old book and wonder at the magic of words that need no batteries to make them live!

I love gadgets. However, the printed word will never die.

clicky

International launch delayed. Pre-orders outside the US now set to begin May 10th. And I'm out of the country from May 17th to the 25th. I may get cross.

Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10. We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason—the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far.

I wonder where the bottleneck is?

They probably have sold far more than they expected. Hence fewer available for the international market.
