I do see similarities with Nintendo.

Considering I have probably seen as many half a dozen psychiatrists (long story) and all cleared me of such tendencies stating that I was normal I would take offence at that. ;)

Secondly I think of it as a larger more useful iPod Touch.

Care to elaborate on 'more useful'? I can only assume these are industry uses? :?

Bigger screen and better storage better for watching films on, especially with a 10 hour plus battery life.

Apparently iPad sales have been grossly exaggerated.

I do believe that pure brand loyalty will play a huge role in the initial uptake of the iPad.

It's only in the last 12 months that the correct combination of technology has become available to create a slim, light and reasonably powerful tablet with good battery life. Other companies have tried in the past, but the technology always let them down. Most tablets in use to date have been unattractive, bulky and restricted to niche markets. Most companies treat tablets with caution, having had their fingers burned before.

Although Apple have never had a truly original idea, they are smart. They wait until the technology is ripe before releasing it to market. Their products popularise concepts others have failed to make profitable because they learn from the others' mistakes and meticulously design the products to be beautiful and easy to use.

They know their market. They know what features and failings are acceptable to them. It's no surprise they have a loyal following. As long as their fans have money to spend, Apple will shepherd them wisely and profit greatly.

300 000 in one day is still pretty impressive with no advertising.

This did ring true for me. IIRC that is why the Wii sold so well too.

I thought the reason that the Wii sold so well was that it put the fun back into gaming, and was a good alternative to the "slightly too realistically scary" games which the wife doesn't like... That's why she wanted to buy one, anyway.

They may not have done any advertising themselves (there is an IPad ad, we may not have seen it because they haven't set a UK launch date yet) but they have had an awful lot of publicity about it. It was on the BBC 6 O'Clock News for pete's sake.

There were no fun games on the other consoles? I think the intuitive nature of the controls had a lot to do with the Wii selling well. Same for their other products.

Yes but still a lot of free publicity though. :D

I'd say it's different (to what your saying) and similar to the original point/comparison.

Every "proper/hardcore" gamer that i know who's bought a Wii eventually stopped playing it regularly after the novelty value wore off and maybe only brought it out for the bigger more "quality/serious" releases.

In the same sense that Jon said that Apple's user base doesn't comprise of people who are interested in the actual technology, I'd say that most Wii users aren't necessarily actually interested in gaming. I.E. I'd say that people generally go "game" on the PC, 360 and PS3 whilst on the Wii they merely "muck about".

Except of course that it'll only do 720p due to the screen resolution but I guess that all comes back to the whole technical vs. design aspect of it. Plus they will need something to add for iPad 2.

Indeed it will, but it'll be on the back of the success of the iPod/iPhone and not the Mac to a large extent.

I suppose that comes down to what you want to call and Original Idea. I'm fairly confident FireWire was an Apple idea. As serial communications interface obviously it's not an original idea but the implementation is.
