Apple adds an iPad-ready web page list | | | | Quote: Apple has added a section to its website which lists key sites which are 'iPad ready' – including the likes of CNN, Reuters, Time and People magazine.
Apple has produced a list of major mainstream content providers, and there is also a form to allow you to submit your site, with a how-to guide for webmasters.
Obviously the big no-no is Flash, which is still not supported on the iPad, despite claims from Apple that this is the ultimate gadget for surfing the web.
Desktop experience
"Safari on iPad is capable of delivering a "desktop" web experience," explains Apple's guide.
"iPad has a large, 9.7" screen and fast network connectivity, and Safari on iPad uses the same WebKit layout engine as Safari on Mac OS X and Windows.
"You can ensure that your website looks and works great on iPad, and even create new touch-enabled web experiences for your customers, by considering a few specific differences between iPad and other platforms."
Touching
Constructing for the touch interface is clearly a key factor for Apple – with the guide adding: "Although an external hardware keyboard is an option for use with iPad, the primary means of interacting with web content in Safari on iPad is through touch.
"The software keyboard appears in Safari on iPad and iPhone when a form control that requires text input…gains focus.
"Users should not be forced to rely on a keyboard to navigate your webpage."
So which media outlets will be featured on the UK Apple iPad site? We can hardly wait to find out.

Apple iPad in depth: the iBooks reading experience | | | | Quote: How often and why do you read? These questions are crucial when contemplating the iPad’s iBooks app – Apple’s attempt to wrestle readers away from their Kindles and paperbacks.
Click here for our definitive iPad review
I’ve read a number of giddy reviews of iBooks in recent days, praising its layout, page turn animations and speed. This is the problem with asking a technology journalist to review an eBook reader. Nine times out of ten we’re going to review the technology, rather than the reading experience.
I can understand the giddiness, as the technology behind iBooks is wonderful. Colour illustrations are crisp and beautiful, the page animation allows you to slowly tug the corner of a page across the screen until it turns. The live search facility picks out all paragraphs with the keyword in, and updates immediately as you type, while font size can be smoothly altered by rolling your fingertip up and down a slider.
It’s the closest we’ve come to seeing the advantages of computers brought to books, and that illusion holds until you sit down with a lengthy text. At which point you’re stuffed.
The most immediate problem is that the iPad is far too heavy to comfortably read a book on. Amazon’s Kindle 2 weighs a comfortable 289g. The iPad weighs 680g without the 3G module, and 730g with one installed. That’s a lot of bulk to hold in the hand for a prolonged period.
I’m also wary of the screen’s contrast – which is astonishing for watching movies, viewing pictures and browsing the web – but becomes uncomfortable after ten minutes of reading. You can lower the contrast, but I struggled to find a balance between eyeball sizzle and eyeball strain. It’s also going to be a problem when you venture outdoors, with the glare making reading almost impossible.
I mentioned earlier that your reason for reading will be crucial to your enjoyment of iBooks. Anybody who enjoys spending their evenings absorbed in a book will struggle to read on the iPad, and for those people looking to make the technological leap, I’d still recommend a dedicated eBook reader, namely the Kindle or Sony Reader Pocket Edition.
But while it may not be an enjoyable reading experience it’s certainly tolerable in short bursts, and anybody reading a few pages on a bus, or just quickly scanning through text for research, will find it perfectly acceptable.

iPad would be a great place to store all those geeky manuals I have lying about the place. Not so sure if I’d want to use it for leisure reading.

You want a new computer entirely for use as manual storage? That strikes me as a solution looking for a reason. Mark

There are two things I'm bored with at the moment: iPads and coverage of the election.

Yep, I can get behind both of those Heather. The irony being that I've heard more about the election from you than I have any body else. *shrug*

Heh. I said I was bored with the coverage. I'm bored with the onanistic media fawning and drooling over every aspect of the smallest comment and concentrating everything on the party leaders at the expense of everything else. I'm interested enough to prompt people to think about the election and what it means to this country beyond what the papers and telly tell to think. I think that's enough OT. Let the iPadders have their fun.

Right this moment, I am wondering if the iPad Simulator is 100% accurate in its behaviour. Safari not to be handling embedded video as per the description on Apple}s developer site. Hmm....

I didn’t say I was going to buy one. The advantage of the iPad is that the page will stay open when I’m working on the computer - the physical books “auto close”.
