Just a quick post to say that I have just done my first remote fix of a mates computer. I have a mate who was having a problem with his Mac. I used iChat and hit the screen share button. He typed in his password and I had full control of his machine. Brill. Ten minutes later problems solved and I did not have to leave the house. *Tries not to look smug when he knows others do this sort of thing all the time* This is the first time I have used the screen share feature of Leopard, I am amazed that it worked so well. *dances like only a cat can*

Mac Geek You know Microsoft have had that feature for over 100 years? Anyway, well done. It's a very satisfying feeling when things work out. Enjoy the smug sensation before something goes horribly wrong

Yes. They patented it in 1908, which is why Apple had to wait until now clicky

I use Live Mesh for remote controlling now. But it only really works internally, i.e. among my computers.

						 Congrats CC!
I still prefer SSH (+ X forwarding if needed) myself...

What? Did you think that they "just worked"? This was a problem installing a new OS. Normally a one click affair. This time one pref. file caused an application to hang. You PC users don't know how lucky you are. You could get old waiting for a new OS to come out. Thus you don't get these sorts of problems.

OSX 6 versions. Windows 6 proper versions with 7 available now if you want it. P.S. Well done on fixing your mate's Mac.

According to Wiki - clicky - there's currently 7 versions of Windows for sale. If we take into account the various minor modified versions, then the list is 22 versions long. Historically, there's been lots of Windows. I'm confused.

I believe that's the intention. We've just started using LogMeIn at our place to do enterprise remote support . The 'pro' version is actually quite an impressive system. However for 1 to 1 'call up a knowledgeable mate because my computer is being funny' kind of help, I find the MacOS ichat sharing system is much easier than the windows remote desktop/assistance stuff. It's just easier to explain to someone who doesn't know a port forward from a pit pony. Jon

I don't know what a pit pony is, but surely everyone who owns a router knows how to port forward? That would be like owning a car without a drivers licence - something you should only do if you have a chauffeur

You'd be surprised I think - in this day of BT hellhubs and Media Virgins, there's probably a whole bunch of people out there that aren't even aware that they have a router, never mind that they can actually interact with it. I'd imagine to the average family user, the router is just 'that thing you plug into the internet'.
