Saw a picture of the ship that rammed the Fitzgerald, it was fairly major container carrier. That weight of ship has a massive amount of inertia, even if they push the engines fully in reverse, plus the bridge is at the rear so visibility of the front isn't great at all. Pretty much relies on RADAR, which of course military ships are specifically designed to confound. It was definitely up to the Fitzgerald to get out of the way in this case. Not seeing a sodding great container ship bearing down on them... Somebody will be manning supply runs to the antarctic for a few years.
