Morning all,

My brother's birthday is rapidly approaching (this coming Saturday) and Mum has just suggested that we get him a turntable. She has seen this but feels it may be a tad pricey, she's asked me to do some research, but I've honestly no idea what I'm looking at.
My guess at budget is around £250, it'll be split between four of use I think.

Having not lived with him for a while I'm not entirely sure of his musical tastes, but I think he'll be playing stuff like Robert Johnson, Status Quo, Green Day, The Clash, Rancid, Franz Nicolay...

Can anyone recommend a good make? I think we wanted turntable and speakers all in one as he doesn't have a stack or anything...

Many thanks,
Ben

You'll need to tweak your budget a bit but it'll be worth it.

with an amp and speakers would sound rather good

I would be worried choosing something so personal as a gift, without direct feedback from your brother. The option in your opening post is a very niche product which might appeal to some, but would make me cry "Why oh why did you waste so much money on this PoS?". I'd much rather be bought the (cheaper and vastly better) item that Saspro listed and spend the difference on a good set of headphones and an RIAA headphone amp, or normal amp. Copying to CD is pretty easy with a laptop, if that's what he wants to do.

Does he have any music reproduction equipment at all? Digital radio, iPod, in car equipment, nice headphones, massive rack with 2KW sub-bass shaking his basement? That would give some insight into what he might appreciate.

Thanks for your feedback both :)

It appears, however, that Mum has gone and bought something already, about 5 minutes after sending me the email....I'm not sure what it is, so just hope he likes it...

thanks again :)
