BBC News - Pavement parking could be banned in England
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51844446

I've no idea where a lot of folks would park in Belfast if that happened here... That's not to say part of me wouldn't welcome it. There's a punter near me that parks his jeep on the bend of an incline you've to speed up to climb. Nearly caused any amount of accidents.

He'll be one of the first against the wall come my rise to power. He's got a driveway for a kick-off!

Seriously though, where are people gonna park?

Good luck implementing that - given the fact that even most newbuild housing schemes are designed to maximise number of plots at the expense of adequate parking.

Not only are there more cars on the roads, they’re larger. A hatchback used to be the size of a supermini but these days are larger in all dimensions. Partly to do with safety and partly to do with comforts and features. As a result, a normal car parked properly could completely block a road. Especially if another driver parks on the other side of the road but too close.

I live on a narrow road. If someone parks normally, I can just get past. A lorry or truck has no chance. Parking on the verge or pavement allows a clear lane down the centre of the road. I imagine, to ensure there’s enough space, parking would need to be prohibited entirely on that road, or limited to one side. Either option does not solve the problem of what to do with the remainder of the cars.

Where I live it's all narrow streets with either terraced houses or large Victorian houses that have mostly been converted into multiple flats.

Apart from at the ends, the terraced houses have no off-street parking. The larger houses have at best one off-street space for every two flats. Even with the cars pulled right up onto the pavements each side so that pedestrians can barely get past, there's only just enough room to get a car along the road.

Where heading towards needing a Tokyo-style legislation where you can't have a car if you don't have off-street parking for it.

I can't see it working. Some streets are so narrow people have to park on the pavement to avoid blocking it.
