Not saying I've thought this through, but the fact there's confusion about which sports events are going ahead just within regions while other countries are cancelling theirs, or have told visitors X, Y, and Z including self-isolation for two weeks... Ireland just cancelled St. Paddy's day and schools have already closed as a precaution. Seems a bit more prudent than Boris continually making statements :?

While the important thing is to keep it all in perspective, it still feels like we're getting information on the fly as opposed to there being more of a plan, IMO.

Hope you get well soon.

I personally find it incredible that the deputy chief medical officer is saying sports events should go ahead because the virus won't survive long in the cold. One person getting infected ties down so many others, at best! If it's a football match that's potentially thousands of people travelling all over the country, some maybe with a virus that doesn't display for 5 days and/or can be passed on without the carrier getting infected.

Why run that risk when she's already saying the numbers infected will be in the thousands? It makes no sense.

It does seem crazy that the government is not being a little more proactive.

I thought the advice was a 2m distance?

And Michael McBride there doesn't seem to know much about, well, real life in 2020.

BBC News - Coronavirus: Up to 70% of Germany could become infected - Merkel
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-51835856

Meanwhile health minister Dorries gets it, a fellow MP who met her is told to self isolate, but the rest of the cabinet she met in recent days isn't even being tested? How many people are sitting in rows in the Commons again?

Things to think about:
Covid-19 seems to be highly virulent (easy to spread) but little mortality (hasn’t killed as many as say a proper “flu” virus would in winter).
There’s a danger it may mutate into something more harmful. We don’t know yet.
Children seem to be largely spared. Good, given they’re still developing an immune system.
People are stupid. We’ve had patients ring up for an appointment, have been screened by our receptionists for coronavirus (they ask about travel and about specific symptoms; if clear, they get an appointment), then turn up and tell us they’ve recently travelled to an infected country and now have a cough. These aren’t uneducated idiots. These are people who are degree-level educated but somehow think they’re immune to what’s going on. W*nkers.

So what I'm getting from recent statements and reports is the implication we're letting Corona spread a little so that we build up 'herd immunity' for the future. In other words, enough people catch it and survive so that when it comes round again that instance dies out on reaching those people.

Is that about right? They can't outright say that's what they're doing because people would freak, but that seems to be the height of it.

Just about every other country is taking more stringent measures, in every way. We haven't even stopped people visiting the elderly in care homes who we know are the most susceptible to the virus! America for it's size, dumb-ass president, lack of sympathy when it comes to cost to the individual and testing kits, still has a relatively low count in terms of both deaths and infection. But they still introduced what look like sensible measures (apart from the usual WTFery from Doughnut Trump himself of course).

Here in NI, our deputy First Minister has now said she wants to see schools and the like closed because sports organisers, people on the street, and the Irish Republic have done/want it. She made the statement standing on her own, no party members, no sign of the First Minister. Yesterday she said we were going by the science. So which is it to be?

I don't buy this notion that acting 'too early' will see fatigue set in and people start ignoring advice. Many are already ignoring advice. Many are already taking precautions. You have to when even cabinet ministers aren't following their own fcuking advice in not getting tested after being near a carrier!

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this all feels like an unnecessary shambles. And a deadly one.

Edit

https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... d-immunity

Why would this become an annual event virus? What are it's origins for him to think that, and wouldn't it mean a mutation of the virus? Again, I'm hardly an expert, but if they expect this thing to still be around in winter when we've already been told it doesn't like the cold... One, they're seemingly winging it. Two, your 'herd immunity' still isn't going to help the most vulnerable in that scenario, surely.

I think the 30 year release date papers for this one will be staggering.

Announced yesterday, all educational establishments closed. Europa League, Premier League and 1st and 2nd division all stopped, ice hockey league has simply closed the season, it looks like the bastekball league will follow suit. It is the first time since the outbreak of the 2nd World War that football has been cancelled.

The hospitals closed their doors to visitors yesterday. Patients have to make do without family and friends trapsing their virus ridden bodies through the hospital corridors. One of the local firebrigades has quarantined its employees - none are infected or suspected to have been infected, they want to ensure as many as possible stay healthy, so they can still respond to emergencies.

Children of medical staff and emergency services must still be looked after, so the schools will have to provide skeleton cover to cope with the affected children, the rest have to be looked after by the parents - and the parents have been told not to fob their kids off on their grandparents, because they are the highest risk category!

My employer is offering employees with children under 12 up to 7 days paid leave, without it affecting their holiday entitlement.

The goverment is putting aside half a billion (long scale, not discount US billion) Euros for providing credit to businesses that are affected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and either have to shut completely for the duration or have problems staying solvent. Some of the businesses are a bit upset about that, saying that they need a one-off payment to keep them going, not another credit hanging around their necks.

Here, if you don't go to work, you have to get the OK from your boss. It comes out of your holiday allowance, or can be taken as unpaid leave. EXCEPT: if you have to self-isolate, because you have been in contact with an infected person, the company has to keep paying you. If you are ill, you get sick pay as normal. If the company decides to close its doors or has to close its doors by the authorities, they have to keep paying their employees (they have a duty to provide their employees with a working environment, if they can't, it isn't the employees fault, therefore the company has to pay them).

As lot of people hamstering (Hamsterkäufer and hamstern sounds much more adorable than panic buying). The tins, paper products, pasta and rice shelves were pretty much ransacked when I got to the supermarket at 9:30 this morning. We've bought a little more than usual, but haven't really stocked up on much, yet. We have enough to get us through a couple of (bland) weeks, if we have to. But that is probably a couple of days more than we would have anyway. We usually have a few tins of this-and-that kicking around, but we generally cook fresh every day, so the tins are usually in the cellar for months before they get eaten.

Apart from hand washing and not shaking hands, we are still living pretty normally. I think we've had maybe 4 cases around here (100KM radius). A school where the wife of my boss works had a suspected case on Thursday. I'll be interested to see whether she came in contact and whether they have to quarantine or not.

One of the biggest problems is that the disease is very minor for a large number of people. But for those that are susceptible, it can be deadly. Therefore a lot of people are saying, well, the flu kills more people each year, or it isn't as severe as a common cold, so why all the fuss? Which doesn't help.

The one good piece of news yesterday was that there are now more people (70,000) who have recovered from the virus than are currently known to be infected (65,000). That said, given that countries like America are refusing to test a lot of suspected cases, up until now, the actual numbers are still unknown.

What gets me is the people buying stuff they obviously never do otherwise (reminded me of Xmas). Like the own brand Tesco cereal is usually fully stocked, but patently people were lifting that over the Kellogs because they were buying loads cos it was cheaper.

I wish there was some way it could be rationed out more fairly to the vulnerable, hell if only to frighten the absolute w@nkers that are loading trolleys like they're somehow gonna starve.

"There's no cereal on the shelves, Susan! No pasta either!"

"Have a bagel and you haven't eaten pasta in years, you berk."

"But...but... bleach!"

"Yeah, let's put bleach round everything we own... what sort of a moron are you?"

What sort of a tit was going to Spain who didn't absolutely have to anyway?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-51881805

Purely as a silver lining, I'm so hopeful they have to close my workplace for a bit... (not that I'm in education)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51889957

Still letting people into care homes who don't really need to be there. I'm sorry, but someone feeling lonely is much more preferable to their loved ones wondering if they killed them.

Urgh, sorry, but the stupidity around this in the UK is more frightening to me than the damn virus.
