So what would be yours?

5 is an awfully tight number - and the desert island setting & situation would influence me greatly - in that they'd have to be have constant-replay/return value - which (for me) means long-length storylines & free-roaming play - and since Peter was allowed an internet connection for WoW, I'd be inclined to say that opens up online playable games - so - if pressed:

Doom
the single most time-consuming game of my entire life - online deathmatch & player made maps n' mods give it life-after-the-game-itself - and with DoomCAD installed I'd be made up.

Far Cry 3
Yes, another shooter, but seriously, even though it's a recent title - and I'm still hungover from completing it, I can pick this up and play non-stop - and imagine I will for some time

Skyrim
Although the classes & story-arcs all eventually merged as you progressed, the scale, and variable-replay value means you could return constantly (less so with RDR, Borderlands & Vice City IMO)

SSX
Most probably 3 (maybe Tricky) - because again, it's one of those games that just pushes and pushes you to go back and do better - which I don't get from pure-racing games like Forza/WipeOut/etc.

Sim City
I'm an architect, I needed a God-game, and as fun as Dungeon Keeper, Megalomania, Settlers and such were good, the grand-daddy would win for me.

(There's a good chance I will return to revise this)

OK my 5

I will agree on
Doom
Skyrim

Then
Elite
- As this was also a ground breaker and is open ended

Battlefield 3
- as it has a lot of playability

Command and Conquer probably Generals
- need at least one RTS game but not played the Total War series and thinking of getting Rome II so that might change

I don't think I could do it. I could maybe pick my top five per generation or per console.

The original Worms is definitely in there... I'd need to give it more thought, cos I lean towards older stuff.

Worms
Streets of Rage
Darksiders
Age of Empires on the DS

If I think of one more I'll get back to you - part of the problem for me is there are so many games that are awesome but I spent way too long getting infuriated at, like Cannon Fodder, some of Vice City's dumb-ass missions that you only passed with sheer luck, and so on.

Skyrim
Civ 4
One of the Gran Turismo titles (I've only played GT3, but that sapped up a phenomenal amount of time)
Crysis
Mass Effect 2

Ooh, any Call of Duty up until MW3. The action and story in the SP were always brilliant if totally daft. The MP was great except for MW1 and WaW IMO.

Yes some upgrades are good and others are dire. That was why my inclusion of Age of Empires only covered the early versions.

Freelancer - this took two of my favourite games (Wing Commander and Elite), combined them and bested them both.

Half Life 2 - it blew me away when it first launched, and I still replay it now.

Star Wars: TIE Fighter - Probably one of the biggest timesinks of my life.

FTL: Faster than Light - Very recent, but likely to challenge TIE Fighter in the timesink stakes.

Dishonored - Again, very recent, but simply and stunningly brilliant.

Tie Fighter was amazing and was probably the first game that had me routing for the Empire.
