An important part of that story was how all the drivers who were actually paying attention could see the accident waiting to happen, and took pains to avoid being a part of it. I've spent a lot of time driving and seen a lot of stupidity, and a few things I wish I could unsee.
Accidents involving the unforseable are very rare. It most often comes down to lack of attention, or stupid impatience. When you're driving, you shouldn't be doing anything else. You should never be going so fast that your braking distance is further than you can see. Don't overtake if you don't know it's safe. Keep your eyes on the damned road and don't be reckless; it's not too much to ask, surely?!
It only takes a quarter of a second to commit murder by reckless driving. Apparently, about 3000 people a year are killed on our roads. That's on average over 8 per day, which is better than it was or in many other countries:
