My 1st Gen Apple Time Capsule has died, and so I need an new wireless router. I could get a second-hand Time Capsule but I'd rather have something new. I don't need the NAS facilities.

Had a look at the wireless facilities of the Virgin Cable Modem it's attached to, but the wireless is very poor compared with Time Capsule.

I need to be able to hide the SSID.

Also to restrict wireless clients to ones with known MAC Addresses.

Must support 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

Any suggestions?

Budget?
I went for a full Unifi setup to replace my Airport but that may be overkill. An Amplifi setup may work for you.

Bearing in mind I can get a NOS Time Capsule 2TB for less than £300, I don't really want to spend any more than that.

I was recommended the Unify system on another forum but the range seems confusing to me and I need those 4 ethernet sockets from the Time Capsule as well as the WiFi capabilities.

I looked at Amplifi but the tech specs were somewhat lacking in detail.

I'm pretty sure the Netgear D6400 I use at home can do all that. If you don't need the built in ADSL/VDSL modem then the R7000 is the nearest equivalent non-modemed version (I thought there would be a R6400 but couldn't find one). It's about £40 more though.
I don't have any issues with the wireless range from the D6400 but my house is fairly small and downstairs is open plan so hardly a challenge for a wireless router.

Thanks!

I've ordered an R7000 which should be here later today.

I'll let you all know how I get on.

I'll second Unifi.

Red, why do you need to hide the SSID? Most routers will do that, but it is pretty pointless these days. If the network is secured using WPA2 or WPA3 (only the very newest of routers support that), there is no need to hide the SSID. A strong password will protect the network and anybody actually looking for the network can sniff it out using wireless tools in a matter of seconds.
