Hackers were able to remotely install surveillance software on phones and other devices using a major vulnerability in messaging app WhatsApp, it has been confirmed.

WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, said the attack targeted a "select number" of users, and was orchestrated by "an advanced cyber actor".

A fix was rolled out on Friday.

I found it was interesting that the exploit worked on iPhone, Android and Windows Phone!

Over here, the DPO has decided that WhatsApp contravenes GDPR and is therefore illegal. We aren't allowed it on our company phones and I have managed to get the family to switch to another platform.

Also in the news was a failure on the Twitter App for iOS. If you had multiple accounts and turned off tracking on one account, but left it on on the other, both accounts would be subject to location tracking. This information was also then sent on to a "trusted partner".

I use Whatapp as that's what my wife, mum etc use.
My friends on the other hand all use Viber.
Personally I think Viber is slightly better as you can edit messages for typos etc.
