One of my clients has managed to break his copy of Office 365 so it will no longer reliably open or work.
I've tried the suggested approach of using the Online Repair function, but it appears to have stalled on Step 1 for the last 3 hours, and AFAICS there is no network activity.
How can I tell if it is actually doing anything?
If it has stalled how can I exit the rear program?
If this method doesn't work what else can I do?

Can you not uninstall it, then install a completely fresh copy? I'm sure I've done this in the past.

That would be my first step as well. Full de-install and re-install.
I'd also give a registry cleaner, like CCleaner (the current version, the previous one was infected by a trojan) a shot.

The same way as repair, but select deinstall.
For the reinstall, you need their Office 365 account to log onto the office.com website, then you can push a new install to the PC.

Office 365 click to run thingies don't uninstall well via the normal method and tend to promptly poison the reinstalled one. There's a removal tool for it here https://support.office.com/en-us/articl ... n-US&ad=US

Thanks to everyone.
In the end I just left the computer on while I was away all weekend and on Monday morning when I returned all appears to be back to normal. Obviously it was doing something whilst it was endlessly displaying the step 1 dialogue box with the (non-)progress bar, even though I couldn't see any evidence of it and there appeared to be no network activity between the computer and my router.
