I couldn't sleep last night so chose something from the Amazon Prime list to put on. I chose Divergent. I get I'm not the target audience for the film by by god what a crappy film that is. Thankfully tiredness crept in before it finished so at least it did its job for me.

Is that the first one? I thought it was just OK, cheesey as I expected it to be.

The Phantom - When they reboot this, and they will, they should play it straight. Don't get embarrassed and make half a comedy, that's worked for nobody but Deadpool cos he's properly violent. And insane.
There are flashes of brilliance in this (no wonder, film geeks will recognise names like Ladd and Dante in the credits) that are outshone by the fact that nobody knows what tone to go for. One minute Phantom's a badass, the next he's camping it up or playing it like Adam West.
There are some incredible logic holes too (the world's fastest horse and 'you hid those where exactly?'), but it all moves quickly enough, more than you can say for the average film.
As above, played straight you'd have an old skool adventure film like Indy Jones. There's a reason they're trying to bring him back even now, Doc Savage too. And even better, there's any number of ways of expanding and soft rebooting come the time. Take your pick from the son always taking on his father's Phantom role to Defenders of the Earth, where Flash Gordon and many others appeared. Introduce them in a Phantom film then give them their own shows.
Brian Blessed will cameo of course, that's a given.

Righto, been flying around a bit so watched some films whilst travelling. Never quite the same as watching at home or the cinema, and you never know what's been edited out.
Daddy's Home Some sort of comedy that never really hits the spot. Ferrel is funny, as is his acting. Wahlberg is okay. The problem is the writing. It almost feels like they went from scene to scene and then had to work out how to connect the two.
The Martian Started off really well but sagged a little in the middle. Maybe because there wasn't enough scientific explanation, or maybe it was hard to do a sci-fi film that was plausible. I'm not sure. Damon did really well and you could see his character becoming leaner throughout. He didn't go as wacko as I thought he would with isolation. The "twists" were entirely predictable and you could tell what the outcome was going to be. I almost feel if the ending was different, it might have been more poignant.
Concussion Really surprised with this one. Will Smith acts as a Nigerian man complete with accent. There's none of his trademark "black attitude" (for want of a better phrase). There's no real action. It's almost like a documentary. But the way it's written and edited did entertain me.
Star Wars - TFA I probably need to watch 1-6 first to comment.

You could probably just watch 4, 5, and 6, or even just 4 (the story is essentially the same). <runs for cover/>

I too have spent a lot of time on planes recently.
Brooklyn A classic story, a very familiar setting, familiar tropes - done well, with good acting, enjoyable. One of those films where everyone treats the heroine as being plain despite her being beautiful. An unchallenging romantic feel good film, which is refreshing as everyone seems to avoid doing that these days. Will do nothing for your street cred. 7/10
Trumbo If you like Hollywood (it's a film about films) and American history, this is a very good film in my book. Brian Cranston, Helen Mirren, John Goodman and Louis CK (he's even all right). 8/10 Lots of talking and subtle humour, so the hoi polloi on IMDB drag its score down.
The Big Short and Spotlight You already know these are good, you should watch them if you haven't already. Spotlight is the better one. 8/10 and 9/10.
Everest I started watching this expecting it to be too dull, it ended up being absolutely gripping. Helped by being at the same altitude. Seriously, watch this on a plane, it's perfect. True story, I won't spoil it. 9/10
Last Vegas Not a new film, one of those I watched when I'd seen all the new ones I'd wanted to see. Stellar cast. It's [LIFTED]. 3/10

Midnight Special - The film's under two hours and it's running time still should have been used to expand on the characters, they're all one note and not even that likeable. And the payoff didn't work for me either, not helped by some absolute nonsense beforehand (the US military is even dumber in this film than in real life).
There are some great moments and character beats, but it's very disappointing overall considering the potential and cast.

Finally got round to watching BvS last night.
Went to the Vue. Never experienced Gold Class previously. Loved the comfy seats (electronically adjustable leg rest and back rest). Nice table with holders for large drinks. Small theatre but large screen.
Just a shame the film was a bit of a let down after all the hype. Still, I enjoyed it a lot more than MoS.

I read Batman is closer to the comics than ever before, but the film itself pretty much sucks.

I have to disagree with you on this one. It's as predictable as hell, but if you want to sit down for an hour and a half, or however long it is, switch off your brain and chuckle at the old folks it's not too bad. I'd give it a more generous 5/10

Captain America: Civil War - Great. I'd actually need to watch it again because there's a few things I'm totally unsure of in terms of opinion, but it's a cracking film overall.
Good dialogue, action, pacing, the works.
Jungle Book - Just so meh. It's neither good nor bad, though you'd have to wonder at all the talent involved and only Idris truly standing out. Seriously, you'd at least expect Bill Murray's Baloo to be funny... And advertising ScarJo's involvement with big posters etc was a total con for the pathetic screentime. I know Kaa only briefly appeared in the original, but it was a totally wasted opportunity here.
Put it this way, it's a Disney film that hasn't even got good sidekicks. The lead isn't even that likeable IMO, but that's possibly because any character development there is relying on him encountering yet another new animal. And there's times when it sounds like a Joss Whedon film in terms of dialogue...
Frankly the visuals were the only real reason to stay.

Just come back from seeing WarCraft. For a film derived from a game I thought it was pretty good. They've done a decent job of transferring a lot of the game elements to the screen. I haven't played the original WarCraft on which I assume this actually based - I started on WarCraft III really so it's obviously set a long time before the events of III. If you liked the games then it's not a bad stab at the story and it's a passable fantasy film in any case although I won't be holding my breath for Oscar nominations I'd be genuinely interested in seeing if they could pull together a StarCraft film.
