Existing is a venerable Epson R200 which has been fine. Suffers all the usual inkjet drawbacks but doesn't get asked to do much more than invoicing and site reports these days. Epson genuine ink for this outdated model has become expensive, (always was) but there was usually a deal on somewhere. Anyhow compatible ink in black works fine but colours are just wrong. They are either the wrong colour or dry up before being used. Epson software hasn't worked for eons either. Gutenprint drivers are ok but I can't access any of the maintenance functions.
Should I bother looking at colour lasers or just go mono. Or even stick with inkjet?
I probably print 250-500 pages/year.

For that small amount of use I would say laser as inkjets will just dry-out and clog the print heads.
Can get laser b&w printers now for under £100.

Until this printer (an Epson) I've always had HPs and I when I was working away, I'd often print 2 - 3 pages every couple of months; the longest period of not printing was 6 months. I never had an problems with drying out or clogged print heads - although the HPs had heads integrated into the ink cartridge.

I recently replaced my 7+ year old Konica Minolta colour laser which was still running its original toner cartridges. Replaced as it was getting a bit flakey actually connecting to the computer, printing was still fine if very slow (it was a 4 pass job).
Unless you need decent photo output I'd personally go for a colour laser.

Well the first question is what sort of budget did you have in mind?
I've got a Lexmark CS510dte (it was on special offer at the time I got it). It's pretty good so far although I did have a few teething troubles with the duplex function and the second paper tray - it jammed on the first/second page pretty much every time but then subsequent prints were all fine. Seems to have sorted itself now. Not sure about photo output yet as I've just been doing loads of meeting minutes. Occassionally has a bit of trump to itself while it does some sort of internal calibration but it's fairly rare. Came with high capacity toners (~4k pages) out the box as well.

Canon i-SENSYS MF8230CN all-in-one colour laser printer
Does this strike fear in anyones heart? £225ish print/copy/scan
I have never owned a Canon printer, but noted that the ink jets aren't well regarded by Mac users. But that could be print drivers and Epson aren't good at that either.

A Canon inkjet was one of the worst things I ever bought... HP and Epson have been good to me.

As I said, it was on offer when I got it - it was about half that so a rather good deal at the time.

Whatever you get, get wireless. It makes things so much easier in the house.

Thanks Veato. More food for thought. Such a good deal compared to the smaller ones. Toners cost more than it does, but with 2500 capacity it should do me for ever!
