Dick Smith Dead: ‘Godfather of Makeup’ Dies at 92

Quote:
The legendary makeup artist was renowned for his realistic transformations in films like “The Godfather” and “Amadeus” — aging Marlon Brando into Don Corleone and F. Murray Abraham into a wizened Antonio Salieri — garnering an Academy Award for his work in the latter alongside Paul LeBlanc. In 2012, Smith was given an honorary Governor’s Academy Award for his contribution to the field.

So the effects guru from pre CGI days has gone. A true pioneer, he came up with many new techniques in movies such as The Exorcist, The Godfather, Taxi Driver and the underrated Altered States. You might also have seen his work in Marathon Man and The Deer Hunter and he was a consultant on movies such as Scanners.

Image

One of his greatest makeup effects....Max von Sydow was only 44 when he starred in The Exorcist.

RIP :(

STUDIO GHIBLI ANNOUNCES CLOSURE

Toshio Suzuki has announced the closure of Studio Ghibli. Here’s a translated version of the news article:

"Just moments ago, Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli producer, announced on the TV show of the MBS Jounetsu Tairiku chain effectively as announced as sources close to the studio, Studio Ghibli will close and production studio anime, leaving himself only as a company that will manage its trademarks. As stated in the program’s producer, "the production department of anime will be dismantled," which coincides with the data that we gave in our previous post on this decision had been taken from spring after the poor reception at the box office of Kaguya-hime no Monogatari.

In the interview, Suzuki has also admitted that it was a major setback for the study progress Hayao Miyazaki, one of the reasons already unveiled the portal Rakuten Woman. Once we have access to the full TV interview, adding more data. No doubt that this is a very sad news for Japanese animation, of which we are all fans, because it is undeniable everything Studio Ghibli has given the anime. Please remember that what will be his last film, Omoide no Marnie, premiered at the Japanese box office on 19 July.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Crushes Box Office Records With $94M Opening

From the comments:

"It's been said a lot but still must be repeated:
Warner Bros has said for years that Wonder Woman is too complex and difficult a property for movie-goers to get into.
Disney/Marvel just made nearly $100 million off a movie where a talking raccoon fires a machine gun while standing on the shoulders of a giant walking plant. In space."

I'm not entirely sure I follow the logic there.
