I just hope no one asked you how long will it take. In the world of IT if you say a time it's guaranteed to take at least double that.

When I was working in a civil engineer's drawing office - yowzer! That was thirty years ago! - there was a standing joke about estimating anything.

First, you work out how long it will actually take you. Let's say an hour.

Move the unit of measure up to the next one, so that's a day.

Then double it.

So, a job that should take a day will likely be estimated to take two weeks.

Welcome to the world of Admins.

Although I haven't bought / specified a PC with less than 4GB RAM since about 2004.

512mb of RAM was about £50-£60 in 2004, with a premium on 1gb sticks. :|

Shorts in the office ladies? Really?

This is what happens when you work for a media company with no dress code. Good day if you're a leg man I guess.

Why not? It's hot outside. Are the media-ing any less effectively?

We're going to need photos to see if they're appropriate or not.
It's the only way to be sure.

Thanks. You'll have no doubt seen the many threads in the Networking section.

These computers are from 2004 and none of them have any more than 1GB ram. They are ancient in comparison. The best bit is that I went round to all 20+ computers and updated IE to version 8. We have now been told that we will need to have smartcards and the software will need IE6. So at some point, I will have to go back round, roll back to IE6 and stick something like Firefox on all computers as the default browser.

I estimated 2 hours max and it took me 4.

Thanks to the wonders of Facebook, I was following a thread on the 'Spotted Torquay' page and clicked on a couple of profiles in order to try and dispel the first impression I'd made from their mindless, poorly spelt comments.
Instead, I discover one of them is 'EDL til I die' (lovingly crafted in something like MS Paint to look like dog tags), and his favourite music appears to be 2Pac (3 times no less), The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg...
So my opinions have been confirmed.

I'd get funny looks if I followed the girls round taking pictures. Also I might be reported to HR.
