RE: Current corporation tax furore..

Firsly, guys, getting yourselves in a position where an MP can call you immoral is just, well it's careless.

Secondly... Starbucks pulls out PR shotgun, points it at own foot.

Yes, they really did claim that they did pay taxes in the UK because their employees paid PAYE (before hastily removing it again)...

I've seen a recent article regarding Apple's tax payment (or not) where the journo said that they were bringing in VAT.

Well they are, but no more than any other business who sells products of an equivalent VATable value, so it's not something they have much grounds to sound off about. You'd have to check if it was an Apple PR piece or some third party analysis. I don't honestly know if Apple are doing any accounting tricks in the style of Amazon/Google/Starbucks but frankly it would surprise me if they weren't. Pretty much every multinational is, it's just those three whose necks are the nooses right now. I don't think Apple've been daft enough to attempt to tell people Apple UK make a loss though... That's... spectacularly dumb, PR wise, even if works for the bottom line.

I love it when companies say "we pay £x in tax!" and they're including VAT and income tax.

No, dimwits, those things are paid by consumers and employees respectively.

There are of course employer NICs, but talk about drop in the ocean.

Well it looks like so many countries are getting annoyed that there maybe a change in multinational taxation. It needs to happen.

The reality is that growth was higher when tax rates were higher. It also makes investment a better bet. If your company pays no tax then the benefits of any capital investment are also reduced.
