Oh, OK. I don't know what flavour of christianity it was then, but it definitely happened.

I went to a church wedding once where the bride, groom and witnesses went off to another room to sign the register. I wasn't paying too much attention so I don't know if the priest went or not.

You were correct in that the form you state is that which can be followed by every denomination. It is particularly common in the Baptist and Free Church movements.

However, some churches have been known to insist on separate ceremonies.

The Priest/Vicar/chap-in-a-collar wasn't present when we signed the register; which was in a separate room to the ceremony. I cannot speak to the relevance of that, it's just what happened.

He was at ours. When we signed the register in the back room at the church there was us, the priest and our two witnesses.
