If the results of that work, plus DRS and KERS allow for races like Sunday's then I'm happy for it to be there.

Wouldn't you agree that the vast majority of the action on Sunday would have still taken place, just through KERS and tyre degradation?

There would still have been a lot of action but when I was watching the speeds down the straight the KERS managed about 304kph whereas the DRS put the top speed up to 312-315kph. ::EDIT:: LOL, oops ::EDIT::

I think most of the action in turn 14 and 16 were a direct result of the DRS.

Having said that the DRS had nothing to do with Hamilton overtaking Vettel, Heidfeld or Button (although it may have helped him to get that bit closer to Button). In fact, Hamilton said in the forum after the race that he saved his KERS boost and used it all in turn 6 (or 7?) to get past Vettel.

Mark Webber made some similar moves that were pretty much down to KERS and tyre deg.

I'm not sure how much action there would or wouldn't have been without DRS but I think that it definitely doesn't detract from the race.

I think each of tyre deg, KERS and DRS has its pros and cons that add to the race but also could be seen as contrived.

It is perfectly possible for a soft tyre to be made to last the entire race but that would lead to a boring race so they are made to have a massive drop in performance after 15-20 laps.

I certainly don't disagree that all three could be seen as contrived, I just think DRS is a step too far - purely because of race control limiting where and when it can be used. I'd like to see them trial it where it can be used anywhere, as long as you're in the one second window.

Super softs coming at Monaco. That'll be interesting! I also wonder given the relative slow speed of the circuit how DRS and KERS will work.

Yes, I think that would definitely be a good idea.

As long as you are less than a second behind (and not braking) you can deploy DRS. That would definitely work.

I guess it would depend on how fast you can accelerated over a non assisted car. It will be the low speed accelerations that might be useful. Monaco is a tough course to overtake on. It is more a matter of the winner is the one who makes the least number of mistakes.

I'm a bit late coming back to this thread, but thanks for clearing up the KERS/weight/ballast bit, Ollie. ;)

The new tires are ok but -

All this tire debris on the side of the racing line is hindering overtaking towards the latter
part of the race. Mark Webber went off the racing line to overtake a couple of times in unusual places because of his grip advantage but couldn’t make it stick because he lost stability on the marbles.

FIA might have to invest in a road sweeper to clean it up during a race, one that can only activate its brush and vacuum in the correct activation zone

I agree,

I thyink MB said during the race that with all the tyre deg throughout the race there is close to half a ton of rubber debris left on the track after each race!!!

Ooh, something I did notice that was brand new this week. (I just remembered it)

The tyres now have a silver stripe around the softer option.

The last 2 races the hardness was denoted by the colour of the Pirelli logo and text on the tyre wall. When they were spinning at 300+kph it's hard to tell the difference between white and silver.

That was a very wise decision by Pirelli.

It would be good if they could put more stripes in the tyre compound so you could see how far they have deteoriated.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Ah, yeah.

In the layers of rubber have a green, yellow, red compound at different thicknesses. That way you know how far down they are.

That would be very cool.

I think at Monaco anyone should be able to use DRS anywhere (If they've the balls...)! (8-p)

Formula One subject of takeover talks by Rupert Murdoch and Carlos Slim

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/ap ... ks-murdoch

Quote:
Rupert Murdoch's News Corp is in talks with Carlos Slim, said to be the world's richest man, about making a joint bid for the control of Formula One motor racing – one of the few major commercial sports in which it has yet to gain a foothold.

The bid was, according to Sky News, in the early stages, with News Corp in talks about forming a consortium that would include the Mexican billionaire.

I think Eccelstone is ego enough for F1 without Murdoch getting involved, and I hate to think what would happen to the broadcast if he did.

This.

Exclusive rights to SKY, faster than you can say it; with pay per view back on the horizon, no doubt.
