Hi,
one of my photos, which is on Flickr, has been picked by the Atomium people for their new web site.

Quote:
Your picture has drawn our attention and we would like to use it on one of the pages of our website. If you agree, could you please send it us in a hight resolution (at least 600 pixels wide)?

To thank you, this picture will also have a special place on the website in “Our visitors got talent” section where we will put the most original pictures discovered on the Internet. If you wish, we can add the link of your Flickr page, blog, Facebook,…

The image in question:

As Simon pointed out to me on FaceBook, he’s surprised I haven’t been sued....

If I do, they really will sue me. The claim copyright on all images of the building, and will take legal action. It’s best not to provoke. Belgian laws regarding buildings and copyright are very severe.

Ah, bummer. That seems slightly "not on".

I know a fair few people here (or on the Dennis forums) have had photos included on schmap.com guides to cities.

Looks funky, but what exactly is it?

Personally, I would just be happy to get a photo of my own on a site. Congratulations on that :D

I'm confused, if it's your picture, how can you be sued?

Copyright - plain and simple. In Belgium, buildings can (and are) copyrighted by the architects, and that copyright is defended jealously. The Atomium is very defensive about pictures.

Did you know that you can’t use photos of Trafalgar Square in London without a permit, and that can cost you thousands?

1337_h3nd3rs0n: the Atomium is a large building which is a representation of an iron molecule. The picture is from the top sphere looking down on one of the others, with a maintenance crew working on it.

And you're fine to take photos of the Eiffel Tower, but only during the day as the lighting is copyrighted. Building and model releases are a pain! For a good handy guide to keep with you when in the UK, incase you want a bit of weight behind your argument, see here.

I have too - they used one of my Stonehenge pictures. I also got a picture on the BBC News web site, and News 24, but that’s ancient history now, I think.

I’m on Schmap too, in Venice: http://www.schmap.com/venice/introduction_neighborhoods/p=1302D04/i=1302D04_7.jpg

Very envious of Paul’s selection by the Atomium; even more envious of the pic.

One of mine's on Schmap too, I think it's more of a hit generation thing, I was quite flattered to be approached though.
