Back on the Dennis forums a user called Tinbath compiled this post. This post has been copied and modified so that we can all benefit.
Welcome back Tinbath :D

These HOWTOs are not meant to replace manufacturer's instructions, Distro Wikies and readme files.
We are a small community and whilst we will help you, there is a wealth of information out in the web. The majority of members in this forum only gained their knowledge by trial and error over an extended period and by researching problems themselves. We do advise you to do the same.

Please do not ask for help in this thread, please create a new thread with a descriptive title!
HOWEVER: Please feel free to request HOWTOs in this thread :)

If you have anything to add to the index, please create a thread and PM me with the title of the thread (or external URL), I can then update this post to reflect the changes. Click HERE to PM me.
Or, on the other hand, if you think any of these links are out of date, please PM me and let me know, and possibly supply a link to a more up-to-date howto.

I'm hoping that the glossary will be moved over at some point, and hopefully we'll get some good threads on Ubuntu and other distros.
I may try to write a beginners guide to OpenSolaris, but I need to sleep tonight, so I'll not promise that any time soon :P

Hey hey!

Oh this takes me back......

Big_D and I had such fun writing this and the glossary. Good times, fondly remembered.

You're doing well, my young apprentice.

:ugeek:

Hehe, cheers Jim. Only thought it right that it should come over, I should do the glossary sometime too, I asked Dave about it a while back, but he never got back to me.

Ask him again then.

I've posted this in the HOWTO Central thread in the "other place" due to them deleting my accounts and and thus rendering the post uneditable:

Hi, I've tried to browse the links under the "General Linux" heading but they all go to the PCP 404 page... have these pages been lost in the website reshuffle?

Hi phantombudgie,

I would suspect that Dennis did a cull after they did some work in April. I moved over to x404 with a load of others, I know you probably don't want to move, but you may be interested to know that I migrated most of the threads over to that forum and compiled a list which you can find here

Hope that helps :)
Ben

I am the "Anonymous" that wrote this article.

It's nice to know that Dennis wanted to keep the howto but didn't want to keep me. My login has been deleted and I've had to make a new one. The upshot of that boneheaded move is that nobody but a mod can change the post, not even the guy who wrote it (namely me).

Consquently if you want an up-to-date version, do like Ben said and go to http://www.x404.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=479

Unfortunately the links in HOWTO Central no longer work.

Dennis in their infinite wisdom decided that it would be a peach of an idea to break everything so that vast quantities of accumulated knowledge no longer worked.

I'm quite happy for someone such as yourself to update, improve or extend my work. Furthermore I will continue to host the pictures used on my Photobucket account (as I have since 2006). I will do this for as long as possible or until no longer needed. This is the spirit of Open source software.

If I had confidence that further efforts on my part wouldn't be wasted I'd be here like a shot.

However I cannot tolerate having my work bent and broken and my username arbitrarily deleted in the name of crass stupidity, poor site design and corporate greed. This is exacerbated by the doubts surrounding the future of this forum that continue to hang over it like the Sword of Damocles. Unfortunately therefore, I cannot continue to contribute to this forum.

I hope this site gets better and that someone with half a brain gets a grip on some of the hideous mistakes that have been committed. I earnestly wish that it would return to the halcyon days of yore when former members saved me from depression and post-traumatic stress with their good humour in the all-in-one Meeting place

Moreover, I wish you well in your efforts and hope that you convert many to our cause.

This is Tinbath (aka Rusty_bucket) signing off

The Register are doing a set of articles about Linux, I'll post them in the general section as they become available. First one is up now :D
