As my 2019 iMac is hopelessly slow, I have been thinking about running the OS from an external SSD.

I just wondered whether anyone had tried this and, if successful, whether the speed gains were worth it? Bearing in mind that according to my Speed Test software the Disk's Write Speed is 25.4 MB/s and the Read Speed is 31.4 MB/s, I will either have to go the SSD route or upgrade to a BBC Micro and see if that's any better.

not sure how a external drive would work but the internal HDD can be replaced with an SSD, its not for the faint hearted ...

Thanks for the reply. It certainly isn't for the faint-hearted! The iMac is practically impossible to get into unless a professional does it. There's no direct access to even upgrade the RAM and that's why I was considering an external SSD. The computer is all but unusable even though it's a 2019 model so it's either try the SSD or get something else.

And if I do I'll probably go for a Windows desktop for the first time ever!!

have a look at this as it gives instructions on installing and running Mac OS from an external SSD ...

you could also try a complete wipe and reinstall as that may help ...
