I have a bit of a problem with Apple’s App Store submission. Well, not me directly, but it’s a project I am involved with. Currently, I can”t currently go into too many specifics about what the project is, but the rejections have stumped us.

The situation is this - the stickers contain some historical imagery from the 1990s and early 2000s. I and an iOS dev have been asked by the creator of those images to make an iMessage sticker pack for use on iOS devices. My input in this project has been to research old imagery and rework/retouch it for use on the iMessage platform. The developer has also done a bit of this, but it’s his account that’s being used to distribute the pack (or will be) and he’s done the sticker pack assembly work.

The problem is that Apple’s review process has caused the app to be rejected twice on the same grounds. The creator of the artwork has posted a page on his website saying that he is the originator of all the imagery, and that I and my colleague are authorised by him to work on the app. Still no joy form Apple.

The original rejection was this:

Quote:
Your app or its metadata appears to contain potentially misleading content. Specifically, your app includes content that resembles <name of original artwork> without the necessary authorization.

Next Steps

Please demonstrate your relationship with any third-party brand owners represented in your app.

When more info was requested, he got this:

Quote:
Thank you for your response. For your app to be in compliance with the 4.1 guideline, it would be appropriate to provide documentation demonstrating your association with <name of creator here>.

Best regards,

App Store Review

We believe that we have done this, but the thing has been rejected again for the same reason.

Has anyone here with iOS dev experience had anything similar? What did you need to provide to get the app accepted in this instance? It seems that getting any help on this issue beyond boilerplate answers is like getting blood out of a stone.

I’ll post more on this if I can - right now I’m keeping names under my hat for now. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised if/when this goes live.

We have a PDF of a permission letter from the creator now which we hope will cover this issue. It’s a real faff.

A faff, but at least it means they are doing some checking to ensure that no copyright infringement is taking place... Although there might be a better way / properly documented way of doing this.
