Post subject: | NAS drive question |
Hi, I've got a RAID array, which is made up of 4x3TB drives, set up as a RAID 5 array. I'm getting errors in the log, basically telling me that drive 1 may be on the way out. I checked because the transfer speed dropped like a stone, and I was having trouble streaming videos. My question is, since I have to replace the drive, if I put in a 4TB drive then replace the rest of the 3TB drives, one at a time, as funds permit, with 4TB drives, will the array magically rebuild itself to use the full space available, once all of the drives have been swapped? Or will I have to back up my data then manually build a new array? Thanks in advance. Edit to add: I did gracefully shut down unit before I went to work, on the off-chance that it's just pissed off about something and turning it off and on again might help. I doubt it will, but it's worth a shot... |

If you add a 4TB then it'll rebuild using 3TB of that disk. If it's in XRAID then you can only expand once you've replaced all the disks with larger drives (one at a time & let it rebuild each time |

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm 99% certain that it is XRAID, but I won't be 100% until I get home. Now all I need to do is source some drives. Silly question, but I'm guessing that I should be looking for NAS HDDs, since it is left on 24/7? |

I'd certainly go for NAS specific drives if you can. They are designed to deal with the vibration you get in multi-drive setups better than regular drives. |

WD Reds are always good. Or anything enterprise. |

Drive received and replaced. According to the admin' page, there are only 41 hours left to resync. |
