Apple unveils new iMac Pro for design professionals

Quote:
Due on sale in December at a starting price of $4,999, the iMac pro boasts some staggering specs that should make it a go-to for anyone in the creative industries with enough saved up in the hardware kitty.

It features a Xeon processor with up to 18 cores, a Radeon Pro Vega GPU with up to 16GB memory, delivering up to 22 teraflops of graphics computation. And forget about hard disks: instead the iMac Pro uses all-flash storage up to 4TB, with up to 3GB/s throughput.

Add to that up to 128GB memory and you have an absolute powerhouse of a desktop machine, capable of eating even the most intensive apps alive, whether you're working in static 2D or with the latest cutting-edge VR applications.

Only £4,000 (ish) each? damn it, I'll have two! :o

Xeon CPU, 1Tb SSD, Workstation graphics card and (presumably) a colour critical 5k display.
£4k probably isn't actually that far off.
It'll be interesting to see what they end up doing with the Mac Pro and how much they decide to charge for that.

Indeed. Unfortunately if the new Mac pro has that kind of spec, it won't be cheap either :(. Hopefully there'll be a Mac Pro for those of us who have relatively more modest demands but for whom the mac mini doesn't quite cut it.

I do quite fancy the new keyboard they've made for it actually. Basically they took their wireless keyboard and put the numeric keypad back on, which was all I ever actually wanted in it. You can already buy it in white but I think it looks better in gunmetal. However I'm not about to buy a five grand iMac to get one.

Yes, that would be a rather large wedge of cash just get a keyboard.

Yeah, I'm very interested to see what they do with the MP. If it's a decent size they may have single and dual cpu options again. I wonder if they'll stick with intel or take a risk on AMD - threadripper and epyc hedt and server chips will be out by then and they should have had enough time to shake out any launch issues. In any case, I'm expecting a lot of Thunderbolt 3 connectivity out of the box.
