Hi, it looks like my hard drive looks just failed, got a S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad, Backup and Replace error on booting. It sounded beep beep, beep beep then that screen appeared. is it likely just a boot issue and the disk can be mount it in a caddy to get the data off it? (no backup), or is the disk done for? running win 7 pro if that's any help? Rich

What happens if you press F1? Can you get hold of a Linux cd-based os eg Knoppix, or use http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ ?

set up runs, but 'means nothing to me', get the normal bios type set up screen, then when I exit it just sits there.
I don't have access to a linux cd...

For such cases, I always run Spinrite from grc.com. If it is recoverable, Spinrite will usually recover the drive for you. But still best to get a new drive and move your data over.
