I've been viewing a forum and downloading images linked on the page. All JPG and from photobucket. I normally right-click, save as... Whilst some of the images are viewable, some aren't. The ones that can't be viewed have no thumbnail of image (just an icon), and can't be viewed with Windows Photo Viewer.

I get the message "windows photo viewer can't open this picture because either Photo Viewer doesn't support this file format, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Viewer".

If I find the image link and visit photobucket directly, I can download the image by clicking on the button, or right-click, save as..., put .jpg. The file type is "All files". This then saves the image properly. Doing anything else doesn't work. No idea why.

Is there any way to recover the images? They have a filesize and suffix jpg but won't load with say irfanview or gimp.

What can I do now?

Are you sure they're actually JPGs? Might be worth opening the files in a text/hex editor just to see what they look like.

Thanks. Didn't think about hex editors. Haven't used them for almost a decade!

Didn't save as a JPG even though the filetype was recorded as JPG. Thankfully I found the originating photobucket links in the images so I can track them all down again.
