Hi,
we've just got a new laptop, it doesn't have an anti virus yet.

I am wondering if it's worth buying one, or just using MSE.

If buying what's the current best value/ performing

PC Pro have just done a roundup of AV software both free and paid for - clickety
Not sure if they've uploaded everything they've tested yet but the reviews will all be there eventually.
Best paid (in their opinion) was Kaspersky 2015 and best free was Avast. MSE let through about 40% of the malware they tested so didn't score too highly.

I've got Kaspersky and it seems fairly unobtrusive and as far as I can tell it works well but I guess you never know until it actually finds something.

I've been using MSE for a few years now, and have never had any problems with it.

I've been using Windows Defender (the built in, renamed version of MSE for Windows 8 and 8.1), no problems so far.

After 2 years I ran MalwareBytes over the PC and it found nothing.
