When I enable two-step verification in iCloud, Mail on my laptop stops connecting to server.
I can still get mail on my iPad, but no matter what I do to try and get my Mail.app working, it simply won't connect to the server.
I have had to disable the two-step verification to get mail working again.
The Mac is running 10.9.5.
I've attempted Googling the issue but I couldn't find any issues similar, so I'm at a loss as to how to resolve the conflict.
Has anyone here had similar problems or know a way to resolve the problem?

Mark

Have you set up an App Specific Password for Mail.App?

What if I want to sign in to iCloud using an app that doesn’t support two-step verification for Apple ID?

If you use iCloud with any third party apps, such as email, address book, or calendar clients, you can create app-specific passwords that let you sign in securely, even if the app that you're using doesn't support two-step verification.

Generate an app-specific password:
1.Go to My Apple ID.
2.Select Manage your Apple ID and sign in.
3.Select Password and Security.
4.Click Generate an App-Specific Password.

Mark

I've got 'third party one use' switched on and had no problems with mail.

Tow step verification is something else - I've got it set to send an iMessage when I add a new device to my account. Have you got the Mac in iCloud somehow already? Find my Mac maybe? Might be worth removing it from everything via the website before adding it in again.

Find my Mac wasn't enabled on the Mac, I thought that was what the issue was. So I enabled.
Even afterwards the Mail client wouldn't connect to the server.
There's nothing odd about the setup of Mail. It only connects to the one mailbox, and that is my primary iCloud account.

I believe Mail just talks IMAP to the icloud service. You don't have another mail client e.g. Thunderbird you could try instead by any chance? Ideally one that logs the IMAP transaction...

Yes, the Mail.app uses IMAP, as far as I know and that doesn't support 2FA, so you need to use an application specific password.
