Post subject:  Dual boot Linux Mint & Win 7
Dual boot.

I haven't dual booted OS's since the late 90's. Can someone please remind me whether you have to install Windows or Linux first if you're dual booting.

The reason I ask is because my current installation of Windows 7 seems to be grinding to a halt after four years. I'm going to switch out the HDD to an SSD and install mint.
If WINE can run the windows applications I want I'll just just Linux, but I may have to dual boot with Windows if I have issues.

Windows first

You need to do Linux second so it picks up the Windows partition and chains into the bootloader

Yep. If you do it the other way round, Windows just overwrites the boot loader with its own.

It depends what you want to do. Virtual machines can't control some hardware, for example.

My old ISDN adapter was USB based, but the Siemens' software couldn't find the device, when it ran on a virtual machine, I had to keep an old laptop around with XP on it, just to manage the ISDN system. We've replaced it with a VOIP router from AVM now.

I'm using vmware and that can take control of any usb devices attached to the host pc.

I used VMWare, Parallels, HyperV and Virtualbox, the Siemens software couldn't access the ISDN device using any of them.

Fair enough, but it does work with most usb devices. Surely it's got to be worth trying before he attempts dual booting, which is far more likely to break his windows installation.

So I could run that from within Linux?
Would I need to leave space on the SSd for another partition doing that or not?

No, because it's just a vxd file. All of the partitions are virtual.

Sweet. Because it looks like I need Internet Explorer to enter my time sheets online for work. None of the Firefox add-ons I've tried will work correctly for compatability mode.

This just got annoying. I tried installing windows 7 via VirtualBox in mint. It worked but didn't detect all the hardware. For example the GPU drivers were generic and didn't offer my screen's native resolution.
I formatted the ssd and just went for a straight windows install. Low and behold, the same thing.

Every time I've installed windows 7 on other PC's is detected the hardware without issue.

WTF have Sony done to their hardware to prevent windows from detecting what's there. It's couldn't even give me WiFi. Which mint could.

In currently downloading drivers from Sony to see of I can install then manually. Slightly worrying as only the GPU ones are an exe file.

Virtualbox doesn't use the native gpu. It uses a virtual device. After you install Windows you need to install the additions.

This isn't VirtualBox. It's a clean install of windows 7
