Post subject:  Connecting a MBP to an HDTV

Does anyone know what the different possibilities are for playing content from a MBP through a HDTV?

My friend has asked the question so I thought I"d check here first. I've asked what version of Mac OS she's running but haven't had an answer yet.

She's bought an Apple TV so there is a possibility of mirroring over AirPlay but that only works with Lion doesn't it?

The options I've thought of are...

Lion - AirPlay to Apple TV (if they are using an AirPlay app to watch movies)
Anything less than Lion - Dvi to HDMI cable. Something like this... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Premium-HDMI-Ca ... B000GDI6FC

Can you think of anything else?

I think it's only that the built-in apps can do it in Lion, but there may be a program that'll allow you to 'throw' video to an AppleTV from Snow Leopard. Note we won't get 'mirror the whole screen to Airplay' until Mountain Lion, even now you need an app that specifically supports it - Lion just has some inbuilt apps that do whereas SL doesn't IIRC.

You might want to have a look at Airflick and/or airparrot

I don't think a DVI to HDMI is what you want exactly. I think (it rather depends on how old the MBP is to be honest) is a mini display port to HDMI cable. Note also that if it's an old(ish) MBP the Displayport er... port only carries video, not audio, Making it much more faff to get movies to work. Much better to try the airplay route. Less hassle. PLus it will make you look much more 8-)

Thanks

Well, I found out she's on Leopard so an upgrade to Lion would require an upgrade to Snow Leopard first. Prob too much money.

My old MBP (2007 came with Leopard) had a proper full size DVI port it was only the later MBPs that came with mini display port and they would probably not have Leopard as standard (possibly?). You may have a point about it not carrying sound though.

I'll have a look at those app though.

Thanks

Oliver

OK, one question - what sort of video are we talking about? If it's in a form that will work with iTunes you can add the video to iTunes on the MBP and then share that iTunes library. Provided it and the AppleTv are on the same network, that should give you access to the MBP's library on the AppleTV with virtually no work. It's not airplay, but it'll work just as well.

Course that pretty much requires the video to be MP4. If it's a DVD or an MKV file, it'll need faffing with first (handbrake, basically)

If they have an iPad they could also use Air Video Server and stream it to the Apple TV via the iPad over Wifi. There is also an app called Beamer that can do the same as Airplay.

My solution, though not maybe the neatest, is whatever dvi to hdmi converter cable to tv. Aego's for the sound.
