It is off-putting when you hear 'Americanisms' in ostensibly Brit stuff (but that's the problem with not having our own industry I spose). Also, we're especially guilty when it comes to our own music and musicians - if 'singers' aren't doing that non-descript warbling, they're losing their accents altogether and finding Yank ones... Not to mention you can actually tell from some albums when a band has been trying to crack the States ![]() |

Yankisms slip out of my mouth every now and then. Largely due to the blurring of our cultures as a whole, massive amounts of American television and movies and the fact that I have friends over there. But I object to British characters saying the wrong thing. Just as I hate dodgy accents on both sides. There's no excuse when plenty of people can do it properly. |

I am no good at accents but them I am not an actor or had any training. Though I do get annoyed with the americanisms to make it easier for them to understand. Get an British-American phrase book if it is a problem! ![]() |

I thought the forum would LIFTED it out. Ah well. Like I say though it's been going on since we made it a colony. Where do you think we got the word 'okay' from? |

As long as we continue to consume American pop culture by the tonne, we should not be surprised, or have the right to complain when Americanisms creep into our language. We force-feed it to our kids, along with the Big Mac and fries and a large diet Coke, then stand there aghast when we hear one call the other an asshole. Yes, yes, of course, we are British. The right to whinge and moan is written into our DNA. To be perfectly honest I [LIFTED] hate it, because it makes sound like a bunch of whining tw@ts. The idea of an unsullied English language is long dead, get over it. |

That's our heritage you're talking about. ![]() To be honest, as I get older, I'm happy that English evolves. It's a living language, after all. It's absorbed and recycled all manner of words from all the other languages it's encountered over the centuries. Bungalow and pyjamas are just two imported words, for example. I do worry, though, that the USA is abusing our gift to them. ![]() |

So is there, or is there not a rhyme for "orange" and I will leave this poem here "Buying bread from a man in Brussels He was six foot four and full of muscle I said, "Do you speak-a my language?" He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich" |
