hi guys, bit of a strange request, but i cant think where else this would go :cry:

im looking for a plug timer, but most the ones ive found are repeating day timers, not what im after. im looking for one more like an egg timer in function, in that you set it for a certain amount of time, and then it shuts off the power to whatever its connected to after the time runs out, but a quick search of the interwebby has throw up nothing :crys some more:

the reason im looking for one is so that i can charge batteries, and not worry about frying them, since my new charger shuts down after 9 hours, but my batteries only need 6 :shock:

so, um, has anyone here come across a contraption like this? or maybe somebody can talk me through making my own? obviously it will need to do up to 9 hours, and not too difficult to do as i am quite a clutz :oops:

Oops.
I'd use a day timer and set it to a 6 hour interval. Just remember to get back to it before the 24hr period is up.

You don't need one. Although your battery charger appears to be "on", it isn't. Once the batteries are fully charged, it switches over to trickle mode, just supplying enough to keep the batteries fully charged. There's no change of frying them unless your charger develops a fault.

@ProfF, thanks for the idea, we have one of hose around somewhere, so i will look into it :)

@dogbert10, i think that only appies for certain types of charger, of which there are a freakily high amount, according to wikipedia. unfortunately i think mine is a simple chargerm rather than the trickle charger you are referring to. i wish id looked this up before buying it now :evil:

Had the exact same issue many years ago. Used a normal 7 day timer and wired up a latching relay so you had to press a button to start it. That stops it charging the second day.

However, my parents did find a more suitable timer in their local supermarket. They use it on the well so the pump only runs for an hour or something. I've never seen one in this country, but they do exist.

I've left batteries charging for weeks because I forgot about them :?

You could make one...Could be fun, and should be *that* hard...

that performs the right function, but i was looking for something on a simple pass-through socket - something that looks like this:

but performs an on-demand count down, like an egg timer, rather than a pre-programmed daily routine like the one pictured :)
