I'm posting this now before the feeling goes away, maybe it will help me describe it better. I am experiencing a strange sensation, something I haven't felt since I was a kid. My perception of the passage of time seems to be skewed and appears to be slowed down a little, but it is limited to things I am currently focussed on - although, not to the extent that I can looking the second hand of a clock and see it moving slowly - I can hear the kids in the other room playing and talking normally etc.. but I was playing a game, Asus Motherboard Mayhem, which is a geeky take on Desktop Tower Defence; anyway, the game gets pretty manic with a lot of things coming at you at once. I've played it dozens of times, usually while encoding video or doing some time consuming task on the PC. The thing is, everything appeared to slow down, and I felt I had all the time in the world to react to the pace of the game. It is difficult to describe - this wasn't a computer glitch, and the feeling was accompanied by a very slight light-headedness and a feeling of adrenaline as though I was anxious about something, but I didn't actually feel axious. I have consumed nothing more than Cornflakes and tea, so It's unlikely that I am pissed up or high. I know I'm probably not describing this too well, and possibly sound like a complete nut-job (hence the post title). Anyway, there it is, just thought I'd share. If I had a blog I'd probably have put it up on there. The sensation has subsided now, I'm not worried about it, but it was very strange. If you need me, I'll be in the comfy room with the green crayons. ![]() |

I have had this before in a couple of different ways. The first is the feeling that everything around me is moving really quickly. Last time I remember it I was in primary school but I felt like everything was going about 1.5 times faster than normal. It was a really weird experience but quite cool at the same time. The other is that I sometimes see things as though they are further away than they actually are. Again in school I once felt like I was looking down at my desk from a great height but the strange thing was I was writing on it at the same time so it felt like my hands were really far away. Another one I had (although I had an excuse as I was in hospital and on a cocktail of drugs) was the feeling that the world had rotated through 90 degrees and suddenly I had to hold on tight to the bed to stop myself from sliding off it. That was a scary one. ![]() Glad I'm not alone ![]() |

What you describe sounds exactly like what I experienced, occasionally, when I was a kid.
I'll save you a crayon. ![]() |

You're obviously all crazy, and should be locked up with JV. I only get something like this when I'm pumped up on adrenaline, usually playing sport or fighting. I think that's pretty normal. All you lot are bonkers though. |

I think that's normal when you totally "master" something through repeated practice. It's "being in the zone". As the thought process moves from the conscious mind to the subconscious, it's as if everything is in "bullet time" and you can see the entirety of the situation laid out before you. Your autonomous responses are many times faster than your concious decisions, and you feel like you have almost God-like control. Congratulations. You are unbeatable. Enjoy your high-score ![]() |

I get that sometimes as well. More pronounced if looking through one eye for some strange reason. |

I believe you may be referred to what positive psychologists call "flow". The flow state is when time appears to slow down or stop when you do something that you are very good at. It brings intense concentration and you lose your sense of other things around you. They classify it as distinct from happiness, as it's not a emotion, more a state of mind. It's consequently perceived in a different way. However, it is believed to be crucial to a happy life overall. |

This is true. There are psychological studies that show that when people concentrate on something intently their perception of time changes or at least becomes inaccurate. It's not a new phenomenon either. The samurai in feudal Japan (we're talking 500 years ago) used to try to get into a mental state in combat they called 'zanjin', in which their opponents seemed to be moving more slowly than they should be and thus were easier to defeat. All the stuff you read about practicing in the dark and fighting while blindfolded, that was all about bringing about this meditative state. I used to get it playing Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar ![]() |
